Reaching the summit of Mt. Whitney is one thing. Reaching the safety of your car afterward is another. The 21.4-mile round-trip hike has an elevation gain of over 6,000 feet. Near the summit, the air is thin, and the terrain can be snow-covered in places and icy. It’s a dangerous climb that claims lives every year. In 2025, there were five fatalities on the mountain, the deadliest year of the last decade. In 2026, Whitney has already claimed one life near the summit on Jan. 19. Despite the dangers, between 25,000 and 30,000 people successfully hike Mount Whitney every year. It is…

Less than a year and counting until its first “Universal EV” debuts, Ford wants to change the equation with a new approach to designing and manufacturing battery-electric vehicles. While we’ll have to wait to see if it meets that lofty goal, the automaker claims the new lineup will be less expensive, offer longer range, and be more capable than any EV now on the market. First off the line will be a Maverick-sized pickup offering Ranger-sized roominess and at least 300 miles of range, starting under $30,000. Over the next several years, Ford confirmed today, it will add a variety…

There’s no doubt that Missouri is one of, if not the most, pro-gun states in the nation. I mean, this is a state that took sanctuary status for the Second Amendment and enshrined it into law via the Second Amendment Preservation Act. Unfortunately, that law was overturned by the courts, which cited the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution. (Cool, now do immigration sanctuary laws, guys.)Now, the state is once again considering how to bulk up its protections for the gun rights of Missourians, while trying not to cross the line where the law gets smacked…

The Florida Department of Health’s officials have released an update on a measles outbreak at a university.  There have been 46 confirmed cases of measles across Collier County from January 1st to February 7th. Fifty-seven students at Ave Maria University are quarantined, so far, as the school works on providing free vaccinations to those who may want them.  The vigorous campaign to vaccinate the masses is being promoted as a way to protect the community. Most flipper knives require a bit of actual flipping to open the blade. But with the WEKnife Speedliner, a late 2024 introduction designed by Tashi Bharucha, it’s more like pulling a trigger. WEKnife sent me a Speedliner Flipper Knife with a titanium handle around the holidays. I hadn’t sought it out, but it arrived with a brief note of thanks and carried my name on the handle. I didn’t think much of reviewing it until now, a couple of months later, as it has really earned a spot in my daily rotation. While the Speedliner seemed to garner a lukewarm…

Before the Lewiston shooting, Maine had what was termed a “yellow flag” law. It worked like a red flag law, but it was more limited in who could seek an order. Basically, it left it up to mental health experts after an evaluation.  Unfortunately, the Lewiston killer had seen mental health professionals who didn’t do anything. It was reported that the law was too complex and that no one was really sure how to use it, so no one bothered.A terrible excuse, in my view, but whatever.Regardless of my take, though, Maine implemented a red…

Gun Owners of America is celebrating what it calls another shot across the bow of the ATF. Congress and President Trump just signed the latest federal funding bill into law, and tucked inside is a $40 million cut to the ATF’s budget. It’s not the sweeping rollback some in the House originally pushed for, but GOA says it’s part of a bigger trend: stopping the agency’s growth, and shrinking it where possible. According to GOA, the ATF’s budget steadily climbed from roughly $1.4 billion in 2019 to about $1.75 billion by 2022. The Biden administration later requested as much as…

As I make my way around a hairpin left, a 30-degree slope enters my vision. Undeterred, I turn on X-mode and start to ascend. The Dunlop Grandtrek all-terrain tires momentarily slip and strain as I climb. But the 2026 Toyota BZ Woodland dutifully marches up the grade, greeting me with a stunning vista of rolling hills and avocado farms beneath me as the cobalt Pacific Ocean wafts in the distance. With 8.4 inches of ground clearance, standard all-wheel drive, and nearly 400 pound-feet of torque to play with, the bZ Woodland makes ventures like this comfortable. And, thankfully, I only…

On June 17, 1863, Col. Luigi Palma di Cesnola was forced to watch his men get slaughtered near the village of Aldie, Virginia. Just hours earlier, his superior officer had placed him under arrest for protesting the promotion of a less experienced officer. His saber and sidearm had been stripped away. But the 30-year-old Italian immigrant could not stand idle as his cavalrymen charged the Confederate guns. He broke away, jumped on a horse without a weapon and rallied his men to again charge the enemy. His actions that day would earn him the Medal of Honor. He was the first…
