This article was originally published by John W. Whitehead and Nisha Whitehead at The Rutherford Institute “Kleptocracy: a society whose leaders make themselves rich and powerful by stealing from the rest of the people.”—Cambridge Dictionary America has been backsliding into kleptocratic territory for years now, but this may finally be it. A kleptocracy is literally “rule by thieves.” It is a form of government in which a network of ruling elites “steal public funds for their own private gain using public institutions.” As analyst Thomas Mayne explains, it’s “a system based on virtually unlimited grand corruption coupled with, in the…

A simple movie-night snack at Regal Theatres on Veterans Day, November 11, does more than support a blockbuster. For one day, every popcorn sold helps fund life-changing programs for veterans through the Gary Sinise Foundation. They’re turning a bucket of popcorn into real support for real heroes. On this coming Veterans Day, most people expect the tributes: the flags, the speeches, the free meals. But this year, one of the most meaningful ways to support veterans won’t happen at a parade or on a podium — it’ll happen in the dark of a movie theater, right at the concession stand. Regal…

One problem with many preemption laws is that they lack any real teeth. Any community can decide to pass local gun control, and then the whole thing has to go through court. People challenging the laws don’t have taxpayers to fund those lawsuits, which makes it more of a challenge to file a suit against these cities in the first place, and if they lose, the lawmakers who passed the measures in the first place are out nothing. But if they win, they overturn preemption. Now, a legislator in Ohio is trying to change that with…

I’m constantly amazed at how many people can read the text of the Second Amendment and still somehow believe it leaves the door open to extensive gun control measures. Much of the confusion stems from the introductory clause, which reads, “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of the free state,” and has been taken as opening the anti-gun door. From time to time, someone decides to weigh in on how we, in our time, are unique in the fact that we’ve completely misread what the Second Amendment says. This time, it comes from the…

The American Red Cross is among the organizations nationwide that are coming to military service members’ aid in light of the ongoing government shutdown and potential missed paychecks.Disagreements between Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill have resulted in now the second-longest government shutdown in U.S. history, surpassing the 28-day mark on Wednesday with no end in sight as negotiations among legislators remain generally nonexistent.Concerns have escalated. After the Trump administration shifted $8 billion from military research and development funds to pay the nation’s approximate 1.3 million active-duty members, those same members could start missing pay this Friday. The WSJ has published one of the most slanted pieces of anti-2A journalism I’ve seen in years; an attack on Stand Your Ground laws entitled “Six Words Every Killer Should Know: ‘I Feared for My Life, Officer’. The piece is predicated on the idea that Stand Your Ground laws aren’t just leading to more justifiable homicides in recent years, but that the vast majority of those justifiable homicides weren’t really justified at all, but instead were legally sanctioned murders. It’s easier than ever to kill someone in America and get away with it. In 30 states, it…

I’ll be honest: I didn’t expect a road bike helmet to change much about how I feel when I ride. I’ve worn a number of helmets over the years, and they all do their job: keep my head intact. So when I clipped into the Giro Aries Spherical for the first time, I assumed it would check the same box. Safe? Sure. Lightweight? Probably. Ventilated? Maybe. Then I rode 25 miles on the Rio Grande Trail in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley with 84-degree heat, blazing sun, and zero breeze. A few days later, I hit the Crystal River Trail in…
