Vortex surprised me. At roughly $200, the Venom Enclosed Emitter delivers significant value, featuring a sealed LED emitter, modern design elements, and broad mounting compatibility, all in a lightweight package. I ran it through a battery of drills and live-fire testing; here’s what I found. Key specs (from testing) Weight: ~1.75 oz Dot options: 3 MOA or 6 MOA Battery: side-mounted (no need to remove sight to change battery) Brightness: 10 daylight settings + 2 NV settings Footprint: DeltaPoint Pro (mates to Glock, S&W CORE with plates; direct-mounts like Shadow Systems and Ruger RXM) Why the enclosed emitter matters I’m…
When Chef Tee Cozy lines up for the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 12, 2025, it’ll be the 11th time the head chef from Cozy Noodles n’ Rice, a Thai restaurant in Wrigleyville, Ill., has run the race. If there’s one thing apparent in the opening scenes of this new short film — the debut in the new PACE SETTERS series by iRunFar in partnership with HOKA — it’s that Chef Tee, who moved to Chicago from Thailand in 1996, loves his city. He also loves running. And he brings that same sense of love to all he does. [Editor’s Note: If you are unable to see the…
The gun control lobby spends almost as much time and energy trying to convince the public that they’re just interested in “reasonable, common sense” measures as it does trying to restrict our right to keep and bear arms. So I wasn’t exactly shocked to see Brady head Kris Brown declare this past week that “Brady is not opposed to the idea of restoring gun rights in principle,” but I was curious to see the fine print attached to that statement. Brown’s comment came in a Substack post devoted to the DOJ’s proposed rule on re-establishing…
This article was originally published by John W. Whitehead and Nisha Whitehead at The Rutherford Institute. “When they came in the middle of the night, they terrorized the families that were living there. There were children who were without clothing, they were zip tied, taken outside at 3 o’clock in the morning. A senior resident, an American citizen with no warrants, was taken outside and handcuffed for three hours. Doors were blown off their hinges, walls were broken through, immigration agents coming from Black Hawk helicopters … This is America.”—Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson When the government can label anyone or anything an enemy in order…
At 9,200 feet in the Colorado Rockies, the U.S. Army built Camp Hale in 1942 to train a new kind of soldier. The 10th Mountain Division was created to fight in snow, ice, and high-altitude terrain that had hampered armies for centuries. Its formation was the result of a civilian campaign led by Charles Minot “Minnie” Dole, the founder of the National Ski Patrol, who convinced Army leaders that the United States needed a force capable of operating in extreme cold-weather conditions.Over the next two years, thousands of men learned to ski, climb, and survive at Hale, developing tactics and equipment…
The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and its partners have filed a petition for en banc review with the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, seeking full court reconsideration of their ongoing lawsuit against New Jersey’s sweeping “sensitive places” gun-carry restrictions. The case, Koons v. Attorney General of New Jersey, challenges the state’s post-Bruen legislation, which designates an extensive network of “sensitive places” where even licensed concealed carriers are prohibited from possessing firearms. Critics argue the law effectively nullifies the right to carry across much of the state. A Law Designed to Defy Bruen Following the Supreme Court’s 2022 New York State…
Is the bike going to explode? I didn’t know, but I was about to find out. In September, I was riding the Santa Cruz Bullit X0 AXS RSV electric mountain bike, and following Kurt Sorge, three-time Red Bull Rampage winner, into the new double-black feature — a 30-foot wall ride — on Obsidius trail at the RED Bike Park. I was curious to find out how the new Santa Cruz Bullit would handle such a large drop — I’d never hit one that big on an e-mountain bike. Zoning in, I followed Sorge’s speed and mimicked his pop onto the…
In the wake of the Parkland shooting, Florida enacted a number of gun control laws. It was legislation driven not by fact but by emotion, but it still passed just the same. Among those regulations was a law that kept people under the age of 21 from buying a long gun. Since people in that age category are federally banned from buying a handgun as well, it basically prohibited an entire segment of law-abiding adults from exercising their Second Amendment rights. Now, that law is about to be repealed. In a vote to undo a controversial move made following the…
The Biden administration is facing strong criticism from sportsmen organizations and advocates over recent proposals to ban lead ammunition use on federal hunting lands. Critics argue that these proposals could pave the way for more aggressive measures against hunting and fishing. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is anticipated to release draft guidelines that would significantly restrict sportsmen’s equipment on federal refuge properties. A ban on lead munitions and fishing tackle would eliminate the use of affordable equipment, increasing the overall cost of these sports. Todd Adkins, the vice president of government affairs for the Sportsmen’s Alliance, a pro-hunting…
Military and overseas voters will effectively get more time to return absentee ballots under a bill Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Monday. Senate Bill 259, which goes into effect immediately, gives Michigan voters living overseas and those serving in the military a grace period after polls close. As long as a ballot is postmarked by Election Day and received by the local clerk no more than six days later, the votes will count. Military spouses and dependents are also covered under the new law. Past policy required military and overseas ballots to be returned by the time polls close on Election…

Police in Richland County, South Carolina have made at least two arrests in connection with a shooting at a local park on Saturday night where several hundred teens and young adults had gathered for a “flash party” promoted on social media, and authorities say at least one of the two teens taken into custody was already well known to local authorities. Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott excoriated the state’s bond system in response to the shooting, noting that the two men who’ve been arrested have already been able to bond out, despite the fact that one of them has been…
TRUE GRIT, BONANZA, AND GROWING UP IN THE SIXTIES “Fill your hands you son of a bitch!” And with those words, a “one-eyed fat man” took on four outlaws with a Winchester lever gun and a Colt Single Action. Of course, the quote is from the 1969 movie True Grit and it is one of the most iconic scenes in John Wayne’s long career. The 2010 remake, with Jeff Bridges, was very well done and to many, is actually better than the original. My infatuation with lever guns came from a childhood where we watched Bonanza, The Rifleman, and Gunsmoke.…
A Marine veteran was killed last week in an eastern Ukrainian city where the country’s military has been locked for months in intense fighting with Russian forces, according to multiple sources. Cooper “Harris” Andrews, 26, was killed in Bakhmut, where he was ambushed by Russian forces while defending evacuees, journalist Jake Hanrahan tweeted Sunday on Twitter. Hanrahan said Andrews was killed alongside other “fighters” and was a member of Popular Front, a grassroots conflict journalism platform. CNN, citing Andrews’ mother, reported Monday that he was hit by a mortar on what Ukrainians call the “Road of Life” because it is…
CLEVELAND, Texas — Members of a Texas family, allegedly attacked by a neighbor using an AR-15 rifle, called 911 five times and waited 20 minutes for deputies to come to their aid, a grieving father said. And by the time San Jacinto County sheriff’s deputies arrived, suspect Francisco Oropesa, 38, had escaped and the bodies of five people, including a child, were found in the latest mass shooting to plague America. Oropesa was still on the run Monday morning, and Wilson Garcia, who lost his wife and eldest son in the shooting, said he hopes the suspect is taken alive.”I don’t want…
Continuing to build off an already extensive line of personal defense ammunition options, the addition of the HST .357 Magnum and .327 Federal Magnum loads gives users a reliable and effective personal defense option for revolvers.“When it comes to choosing a caliber for personal defense, the .357 Magnum and .327 Federal Magnum continue to be popular choices,” said Federal Ammunition Handgun Product Director, Mike Holm. “A big reason for the continued popularity of these calibers is the preference to carry a revolver for everyday carry. We are excited to add these new loads to the already proven line of HST…
By Austin Knudsen Years ago, I wrote an article here about the five handguns I couldn’t live without. The list included a Smith & Wesson model 17 .22LR, a Smith & Wesson Model 686 .357 magnum, a S&W 1911SC .45 ACP lightweight bobtail commander, a Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt, and a GLOCK 19 9mm. Several of the reader comments on that article expressed shock that this obvious revolver-and-1911 Fudd (I’m in my early 40s) included the GLOCK 19 on my list. I may be a traditionalist, but I’m also down with some combat Tupperware. As the guy who is in…
Gun control advocates like to claim they want to respect the Second Amendment, they just want what they call “common sense” measures in place. The say these laws won’t stop you or me from exercising our right to keep and bear arms, they’ll just make it harder for bad people to do bad things. Now, many are picking up on the recent coverage of “mistaken” shootings to try and prove that something needs to be done. The Guardian recently did a piece about them, and there’s an interesting quote that kind of gives up the game on gun control. “A…
