The North Carolina National Guard has settled a First Amendment lawsuit with a veteran over his right to criticize his military leaders online. Lawyers for Timothy Stanhope, a retired guardsman who spent roughly 20 years in the military, successfully argued he was pressured to retire over his online social media posts. The Department of Veterans Affairs can now cover up to 10 months of rent, pay utility bills, buy groceries and arrange transportation for eligible homeless veterans under a new policy that took effect July 29. The authority allows VA medical centers to purchase goods or pay service providers when staff determines the help is necessary to keep a veteran safe, prevent the loss of housing or connect the veteran with care, employment and permanent housing. Authorities have discovered that the remains of a murder victim, whose bones and remains were found in southwestern Oregon more than 50 years ago, belonged to a WWII veteran. An armed security guard is being hailed as a hero after police say he engaged two teenage gunmen in a firefight outside a San Diego mosque, likely preventing what could have become a catastrophic mass killing involving more than 100 children. A Texas man searching the shallows with a metal detector found a live pipe bomb near a popular swim area this week. Lewisville resident Mike Reiter discovered the device Monday at Lake Park on Lake Lewisville, near a swim area and disc golf course.
