Kirill Budanov, head of Ukraine’s military intelligence agency HUR, has acknowledged that Ukraine cannot “turn the tide” in the war with Russia. There is no way for the military to win on the battlefield, forcing Budanov to assert that only negotiations can meaningfully alter the course of the conflict. As of right now, Ukraine lacks the ability to push Russian forces back in any kind of meaningful way. Budanov was responding to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s comments that military logic often requires occupying territories while not formally claiming them. Putin added that historically, Russia has operated on the simple idea…

The NRA Annual Meeting this year was my first time attending anything that size in the Second Amendment space. I’ve been to DragonCon–also, conveniently, in Atlanta–but this was different. This time, I had the chance to meet a lot of people whose work I knew professionally, but had never had a chance to meet in person. One of those was Charles C.W. Cooke, who writes for the National Review and various NRA publications. The British-born American still has that accent, which I now hear in everything he writes, and he seemed like a hell of…

Iranian hackers broke into to a system used by a U.S. municipal government to publish election results in 2020 but were discovered by cyber soldiers operating abroad and kicked out before an attack could be launched, according to U.S. military and cybersecurity officials. The system involved in the previously undisclosed breach was not for casting or counting ballots, but rather was used to report unofficial election results on a public website. The breach was revealed during a presentation this week at the RSA Conference in San Francisco, which is focused on cybersecurity. Officials did not identify the local government that…

From the CCRKBA . . . Washington Democrat Gov. Jay Inslee signed legislation yesterday requiring gun buyers to provide proof they have completed a firearms training course before being allowed to complete their transaction, but the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is calling this the equivalence of a “literacy test” that was used to discourage voting by minorities in the South. “We’re talking about rights in both cases,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “For Jay Inslee or any other Democrat to contend ‘this is different’ suggests they’re either dishonest or delusional, and perhaps a little…

So let’s take a look at this case. We’ll answer what an AutoKeyCard is, find out why the ATF is so upset over it, and break down similar cases.…

Gov. Tim Walz publicly stumped for the legislation at a gun control rally on Tuesday, imploring lawmakers to adopt the measures in the name of public safety, while claiming the bills don’t infringe on anyone’s Second Amendment rights. ‘Every other industrialized nation in the world can find a way to keep their freedoms and not kill their children and their citizens,” Democratic Gov.…

Steven Spielberg participated in a master class at the Time 100 Summit and announced he regrets editing guns out of “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.” The film’s 1982 theatrical cut includes a scene of officers chasing young kids with firearms. Spielberg edited the guns out for the 20th anniversary release of the film and replaced the firearms with walkie talkies. “That was a mistake,” Spielberg said. “I never should have done that. ‘E.T.’ is a product of its era. No film should be revised based on the lenses we now are, either voluntarily, or being forced to peer through.” “‘E.T.’ was a film that I…

The World Health Organization has warned of a possible “biological risk” after Sudanese fighters took over the National Public Health Laboratory in the capital Khartoum. Violent clashes erupted between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces, the paramilitary group battling the army over who gets to control the masses, in the northern part of Khartoum state. Many foreign nations made efforts for rapid evacuation of people from the country as violence marred a fragile United States-brokered ceasefire. Gunfire and the roar of fighter jets were heard in Khartoum on Tuesday, half a day after the announcement of a 72-hour truce…

The term “mass shooting” is one popular phrase for describing a certain kind of incident, but another term often used is “active shooter incident.” And we’ve been hearing all about just how many such shootings there have been, with numbers muddied by overly broad definitions that include things that shouldn’t be included. That’s just for mass shootings, though. Gang shootings tend not to be lumped in with active shooter cases, and for good reason. They’re not remotely the same. And it seems such shootings decreased in 2022. Active shooter incidents in the United States in 2022 decreased, while the number…
