At SHOT Show 2025, I had the chance to check out the brand-new HK MR A4 product line at the HK booth.
This rifle is as close as we’ll get to the civilian version of the legendary HK416. The rifle I held in my hand is the MR556 A4, which is one of three models that are in this line.
The other two are the MR556 A4 Pistol, and the MR762 A4. Each rifle has a 16.5″ barrel and is chambered in either 5.56x45mm or 7.62x51mm NATO, as you could have guessed.
The pistol is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO and has an 11″ barrel.
Rifle Details
The MR A4 line only differs from the Hk416 because they don’t come with a chrome-lined barrel. Otherwise, these firearms come with all of the features that you would expect, including a fully ambidextrous design.
The new 45° safety is ambi on both sides, as are the mag release and bolt release. Despite not having a chrome-lined barrel, HK is so confident in its durability that they offer a lifetime warranty on the barrel—if you shoot it out, they’ll replace it for free!
What really sets the MR A4 apart is its short-stroke gas piston system. This system doesn’t introduce hot carbon fouling into the action, which means less maintenance, longer-lasting performance, and less wear on internal components than you’d get with direct-impingement ARs.
The adjustable gas regulator allows the operator to dial it in specifically for suppressed or unsuppressed operation, making it a versatile option for a wide range of uses. The rifle also comes with a standard A2 flash hider, M-LOK rails on all sides, and QD sling swivels on both sides of the handguard.
Not Just The Rifle
The MR A4 upper is available for sale on its own, so you can slap it onto any mil-spec M4 lower. If you are like me, a poor, you’ll have to skimp and save to even afford this half of the rifle anyway.
Now’s a good time to break it to you guys that the MR556 A4 rifle and pistol both sell for $3,999 MSRP, and the MR762 A4 will cost you $4,749 if you purchase it at MSRP.
