The “gun-free” status of the Chicago Transit Authority is once again being called into question (by me if no one else) after a school teacher was repeatedly stabbed by a man wielding a 6-inch knife who reportedly admitted to authorities afterward that he “stabbed an innocent white man.”
The horrific attack took place on September 10, but CWB Chicago reports the city’s police department never publicly disclosed the incident and it only came to light when a witness posted to social media about what she saw.
The woman said she learned about the stabbing from her roommate and went outside to see what was happening. She later posted a video describing the scene, saying the attacker had “started going crazy” on the bus before fleeing and taking another man’s car.
That account is largely consistent with prosecutors’ allegations against [32-year-old Jeromeyo] Gibson, who is charged with attempted murder, possessing a stolen motor vehicle, attempting to disarm a peace officer and other felonies in connection with the September 10 crime spree.
The victim, identified only as a 50-year-old Chicago Public School teacher, had boarded a CTA bus to go home that afternoon. About 20 minutes and several stops later, Gibson hopped on the bus with a duffel bag. When the bus stopped a few minutes later, Gibson allegedly pulled the knife from the bag and began stabbing the teacher from behind; twice in the neck and three times in the back.
After the stabbing, Gibson allegedly turned toward another passenger while holding the knife in the air. That passenger put his backpack in front of his face to protect himself and watched as Gibson fled the bus and ran south on Milwaukee Avenue. The stabbing was captured on CTA video.
The woman said an officer warned her to “watch the blood” when she went outside.
Gibson allegedly continued south to the 3000 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, where he found a red Chevrolet Malibu parked with its engine running and doors unlocked while its owner went into a convenience store. As the 44-year-old owner came outside, Gibson allegedly climbed into the driver’s seat and drove away, pulling the man to the ground when he tried to stop him. That incident was also captured on video.
Gibson allegedly crashed the stolen car about 15 minutes later and took off on foot, but police caught up to him a few blocks away. As he was being transported to the Cook County jail, he allegedly told officers “I know what I did. You know I stabbed an innocent White man. I stabbed a White man in the back. I stabbed him he was tweaking bro. I took ol’ boy’s car. Yeah, I crashed the car because I was feeling bad energy from her.”
Gibson has several felony convictions to his name and is now being held without bond while awaiting trial. CTA policy prohibits the knife that he was carrying in his duffel bag, along with any firearms that are lawfully possessed by riders.
To be fair, the school teacher probably wouldn’t have been carrying a firearm even if he had a concealed carry license, since he was heading home from work in another “sensitive place.” The CTA policy and Illinois’ ban on concealed carry on public transit, though, may very well have prevented other riders from carrying a gun that they could have used to protect themselves and the teacher who was attacked.
At the very least, this is yet another high-profile failure of the CTA’s “weapons-free” policy in that it failed to stop Gibson from bringing a knife on board the bus. Violent criminals simply don’t care that they’re violating a law telling them they can’t bring a knife or a gun on a public bus or light rail car. It’s the folks who want to remain on the right side of the law who are disarmed by state statute and CTA policy, and these “gun-free zones” are a hunting ground for predators.
The Supreme Court made a colossal mistake by not granting cert to Schoenthal v. Raoul last term. That lawsuit directly challenged the Illinois law and CTA policy, and a district court judge rightfully declared those edicts violate the Second Amendment. The Seventh Circuit reversed that decision and embraced an expansive view of “sensitive places” that allows for virtually every public place where crowds of people, including “vulnerable” populations might be found. SCOTUS should have granted cert and reversed the appellate court, but instead they allowed the prohibition on lawful carry to remain in place and empowered violent criminals to have the upper hand over their intended victims when they’re using public transportation.
That decision has real-world consequences, and while I can’t guarantee with certainty that the teacher wouldn’t have been stabbed in the bus wasn’t a “gun-free zone,” I do know that policy and state law did absolutely nothing to make him any safer. Instead, it put him and every other rider at risk.
Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their extreme gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
