Congratulations, you’re having a baby! Babies are amazing, but it’s incredible how much gear comes along with such a tiny person. Don’t let me discourage you; children are amazing, and I couldn’t imagine my life without them. The gear changes as they grow, but somehow the amount of stuff never gets smaller.
It’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole of Pinterest and Instagram and start planning a perfectly matched nursery. The baby gear available today is incredible. I definitely don’t remember half of it being around when my oldest was born 18 years ago. It’s fun to dream a little and start adding things to your registry. And then military life reminds you that maybe that’s not the most practical idea.
The truth is that babies need far less than the marketing world would have you believe. You’re also probably living in a house you won’t be in forever. After all, military moves have a way of sneaking up on you, and repainting an entire nursery – with a crawler or walker – before a PCS isn’t anyone’s idea of fun.
With a little planning and by taking advantage of military resources, you can prepare for your newest family member without overwhelming your budget.
Start with the Essentials
Before buying anything, separate “needs” from “nice-to-haves.” Your baby will need a safe place to sleep, a properly installed car seat, diapers and wipes, a few outfits in newborn and 0–3 month sizes, bottles or breastfeeding supplies and basic health and hygiene items. Everything else can come later.
Babies grow incredibly fast. Expensive outfits, elaborate nursery décor and every trendy gadget often get far less use than expected. Most of this list is available tax-free at the Army & Air Force Exchange Service, often for less than you’d pay off post.
I do recommend, however, finding that one special thing that you really want and getting it. Ask your family and friends to chip in if it’s expensive, but don’t make everything so practical that it’s not fun.

The Exchange is one of the most overlooked tools for stretching a military family’s budget. Every purchase there is tax-free, which, depending on where you’re stationed, can save you anywhere from 4% to over 10%. That adds up fast on a full nursery setup — crib, mattress, dresser, glider, stroller, car seat — and it’s a solid start on your first daycare deposit.
The Exchange has expanded its baby selection over the years. You’ll find everything from diapers and clothing to trusted stroller and car seat brands without paying sales tax. If your local Exchange doesn’t have what you need, its online store fills the gaps with the same tax-free pricing and ships wherever you’re stationed.
For a bigger purchase, the MILITARY STAR Card is worth using with intention — no interest on qualifying purchases paid within 90 days, deferred payment options during PCS season, and rewards that stack with your tax savings. Just be sure to pay it off within that interest-free window. It also pays to keep an eye on the sales calendar: Star Card promotions, seasonal baby sales in spring and fall, and military appreciation events all bring deeper discounts on big-ticket gear.
Accept Hand-Me-Downs
Military communities are known for helping one another. This extends to baby gear. Check your local buy nothing page, ask to borrow something from a friend, and keep your eyes open for post-wide yard sales. Some people — like me — even keep a few key items after their kids have grown, just for this occasion.
Babies outgrow clothing every few weeks during the first months, so there’s no shame in accepting gently used items from friends, neighbors or local spouse groups. Save your money for items that should be purchased new, such as a crib mattress or car seat, if you cannot verify its history.
Start Researching Childcare Early
One of the biggest surprises for many military families isn’t the cost of diapers — it’s finding childcare. If you’re near an installation, Child Development Centers are worth getting on the waitlist for as early in your pregnancy as possible, since waitlists move slowly. Fees are calculated on a sliding scale tied to family income, often making them cheaper than off-post daycare. Family Child Care homes, run by trained and certified providers in your community, are another option if a center spot doesn’t open up in time.
MilitaryChildCare.com provides a centralized system for searching for and requesting care, and fee assistance may be available when on-base care isn’t available. The earlier you start planning, the more options you’ll have.
Take Advantage of Military Family Programs
Depending on your branch and installation, you may have access to programs built for growing military families. For Air Force and Space Force families, the Air & Space Forces Aid Society’s Bundles for Babies program offers education on budgeting, newborn care and financial planning, along with assistance toward baby essentials after completing the class. Your installation’s family support office is also a great place to learn about parenting classes and other benefits available to you.
Give Yourself Permission to Keep It Simple
Social media has a way of convincing us that every nursery needs custom wallpaper, matching baskets and designer baby gear. Your baby won’t remember any of that. You’re going to remember the late-night walks up and down the hallway, the midnight snuggles and the times you wished you had more clean clothes.
Having a baby is incredibly exciting — and exhausting — and at the end of a teething cycle, you’re going to pull out whatever is on top, dress that baby and put them down for a nap. Nothing fancy required.
What your child will have is parents who planned carefully, stayed within their means and built a stable home from the start. Take advantage of the benefits you’ve earned, shop tax-free when you can, accept help when it’s offered and remember that the best gift you can give your growing family isn’t the fanciest nursery — it’s a solid financial foundation that lets you enjoy every one of those precious first moments.
