It’s been a little more than a year since gun control activist and failed pillow salesman David Hogg resigned his position as a co-vice chair of the Democratic National Committee after getting crosswise with DNC Chair Ken Martin and others over his refusal to stop endorsing (and funding) challengers to some longtime incumbents through his Leaders We Deserve PAC.
Now, with Martin facing a wave of criticism and the DNC itself utterly broke, longtime Democratic strategist James Carville weighed in, and half-heartedly endorsed the idea of replacing Martin with Hogg.
And at the end of the day, who cares? I mean, maybe they want to try to get themselves together, some of them are lovely people…there’s Ken Martin. Maybe they ought to figure out, maybe they could be somewhat relevant. I have no idea. If David Hogg wants to take it over, then, I ain’t stoping you — go ahead, man, I don’t really care. And I don’t think at the end of the day, well, it might be fine people —I know some of them are not particularly determined.
“I don’t really care” doesn’t quite match Mediaite’s headline that Carville “calls on Hogg” to take over the DNC, but whatever.
What’s odd is that I haven’t seen any news stories suggesting that Hogg is gunning for Martin’s job, so why did Carville bring up the anti-gun activist? Maybe Carville is just still loopy from a recent surgery, or perhaps Hogg is engaged in some discussions about taking over if Martin is forced out.
Hogg did call for Martin’s resignation back in May, after the DNC released its “autopsy” of the 2024 presidential election. Hogg declared that “Martin should resign, and the DNC should select a new leader who demonstrates competence, creativity, moral clarity, and a relentless commitment to actually changing the broken Democratic Party brand,” though he stopped short of directly recommending himself as Martin’s replacement.
Would Hogg really be the answer to the Democrats’ struggles? Hogg’s Leaders We Deserve PAC has had a mixed track record in the 2026 cycle. Several of its endorsed candidates have won Democratic primaries, but others have flamed out… none more spectacularly than Graham Platner.
Hogg was an early backer of Platner, calling him the “real deal” and predicting he would make an “incredible senator” on the day Platner announced his campaign for U.S. Senate. Hogg even shared a picture of him and Platner taken at Platner’s oyster operation, though the post has since been deleted… along with Leaders We Deserve’s endorsement of Platner.
Axios also pointed out in a piece last fall that while Hogg has blasted the Democrat establishment for “being overly reliant on political consultants,” Leaders We Deserve has given an awful lot of money to the consultant class as well.
- Over the first eight months of this year, Leaders We Deserve spent $4.9 million with about $2.5 million going to consultants and $455,000 on helping three candidates.
- The group spent $1.1 million on digital ads and $965,000 on acquiring lists of potential supporters to help grassroots fundraising along with a variety of communications and fundraising consultants.
- It also spent about $4,900 on ClassPass, the fitness class subscription service.
- The group had $1.6 million in the bank at the end of August.
- The Washington Post previously reported some of these details.
Hogg wants to pull the Democrats even further to the left than the party already is, which is a strategy that may work in already deep-blue locales like New York City and San Francisco. When it comes to middle America, though, Hogg’s politics don’t play nearly as well, and that includes his anti-gun activism.
If Hogg does end up as head of the DNC, that would certainly help to motivate gun owners and Second Amendment advocates, including those who’ve been lulled into a sense of complacency with Republicans holding the executive and legislative branches in Washington, D.C. Given that, as well as Hogg’s tendency to rub even like-minded individuals the wrong way, I would love to see Hogg tapped to be Ken Martin’s replacement if Martin steps down. My guess is he’d be just as successful at guiding the DNC to victory as he was at leading Good Pillow to profitability.
Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
