I’d really like to pretend that anti-gunners are just stupid all around. Some people are making it really easy to think that, granted, but some of them aren’t that dumb. They know what they’re doing. When the numbers don’t work like they want, they use others. Someone out there will give them something they can work with, after all.

Most of the time, it’s sneaky, so most normies won’t realize what’s happening and will think the problem is worse than it is. Sometimes, it’s obvious.

I’m sure the Violence Policy Center thought they were being clever in this bit from their website about gun trafficking to Mexico.

New semiautomatic assault weapons are trafficked across the border from the United States because it is the easiest and cheapest place in the world to purchase them, thanks to weak gun laws and a deliberate strategy by the U.S. gun industry to design and sell military-style weapons to civilians. The government of Mexico recovered and submitted more than 99,000 firearms to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for tracing in the years 2007 to 2011. Of those, the vast majority — more than 68,000 — were sourced to the United States.

Now, that was an interesting time period for them to use. It’s not the last few years or anything. If it were 2023 or something, I’d probably not even blink, but 2011 was, well, 15 years ago. That’s quite a while ago, all things considered. Why use that? Even with the bottom of the page referencing Mexico’s doomed lawsuit against American gun makers-and why Google put this in my news feed, I’ll never know, but its still up, so Ill still talk about it-failed in 2021, so even using dates relevant to the lawsuit would have made more sense.

But then I thought for half a second and remembered that era.

That’s right. They’re using the years from Obama’s Gunwalker program, when operations like Fast and Furious forced licensed dealers to conduct straw sales they knew were likely to head to the cartels, all so the ATF could supposedly trace them for some purpose that turned out to be nothing more than justifying American gun control.

And note that these are the guns that Mexico submits to the United States. That suggests that these are the ones Mexican authorities believe have the highest likelihood of being American in origin. We don’t know how many were recovered in total, such as those “obtained” from Mexican police or military sources, for example, or those that could be reasonably determined to be from somewhere else.

There’s also no mention here that trafficking guns across international borders is illegal, that straw buys are illegal, and that knowingly conducting one as a licensed dealer is illegal.

The truth is that while America’s gun laws are nowhere near as restrictive as Mexico’s, we have no such violence here. Yeah, it’s been bad at times, but not like down there, which really should tell you that the problem isn’t the guns. The trafficking is a symptom, not a cause.

And while I don’t know what the purpose of this particular page is, I find their use of Obama’s scandal-plagued year questionable at best.
