When our Founding Fathers crafted the Bill of Rights, it was with the understanding that these weren’t rights being created by the state, but being expressly preserved in order to keep the fledgling nation from potentially falling into tyranny. They saw natural rights as something innate in people that they got by virtue of being human, handed down by God.

No, they weren’t perfect in their application of this principle, as we’re all well aware, but the Second Amendment preserved the right to keep and bear arms for the people.

However, for the most part, we’re the only nation on the planet that recognizes this fact, and it’s always worrying when I see an official from a foreign nation say otherwise.

The Philippine National Police should have already revoked Sen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa’s firearms licenses after an arrest warrant was issued against him, Justice Secretary Frederrick Vida said Tuesday, May 26.

At a press briefing, Vida said gun ownership is not an entitlement, and that the government should not allow its enforcement options to be limited.

“I expect that the PNP should have done that yesterday, and I’ll give a call to the PNP,” Vida said.

“Basically, there’s an arrest warrant, and having a license to gun ownership is not a right but a privilege. Anytime, the republic should not have its tools and mechanisms limited,” he added.

Vida said he would speak directly with PNP chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. to ensure the immediate cancellation of Dela Rosa’s gun licenses and the confiscation of his firearms.

“I’ll talk to General Nartatez about that. And I expect that it should be revoked as soon as possible,” he said.

Dela Rosa is reported to have 118 gun licenses.

Now, I’m not going to comment on the accusations against Dela Rosa because I’m not familiar enough with them to say anything one way or another. What I’m going to say, instead, is that this is the same kind of thing we can easily expect from our domestic gun grabbers if they got half the chance.

See, when you require people to have a license to simply own something, then you’ve turned it into a privilege, especially when it can be revoked simply because a court outside of the country has charged the licensee with a crime. See, these charges didn’t originate in the Philippines. They come from the International Criminal Court, and they apparently stem from the allegedly brutal enforcement of the country’s drug laws at one time.

Dla Rosa was the head of the national police force at the time, thus he’s considered responsible.

Still, he hasn’t been convicted of anything, yet the state is going to try to take his licenses away and disarm him. Of course, they can’t really find him at the moment, which also shows just how useless licensing actually is. It’s almost like people who no longer care about the law also won’t be law-abiding enough to wait for you to take their stuff.

Weird.

The truth is that the right to keep and bear arms is thought of as a privilege in most of the rest of the world, and even most of our “I support gun rights but…” crowd supports the exact same policies, showing that they don’t.

They don’t support anything of the sort. They see it as a privilege, even if they lack the cajones to actually say it out loud.
