The senseless shooting at a Rhode Island hockey rink on Monday afternoon was a targeted attack by a transgender man intent on killing his family, according to police. The suspect, who died at the scene after shooting his ex-wife and kids, had a history of conflict with his family over his gender identify, and an online profile believed to be that of the suspect is full of references to transgenders acting violently in response to discrimination or belittling comments.

While some folks will want to pin the blame for the shooting on the fact that the killer was transgender, he was also apparently an anti-Semite, pro-Nazi, groyper who also approvingly tweeted Rep. Thomas Massie and former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, Alex Jones, and Nick Fuentes (among others). I think it’s safe to say that the killer had a lot of issues and unchecked anger.

Intra-family violence like this is sadly all too common, and it’s unfathomable to the vast majority of us how anyone could ever intentionally try to hurt their children, much less take their lives. To me, that’s where our focus should be, but of course there’s no shortage of numbskulls who want to make gun control the main issue.

Sports were always a safe spot growing up, a place where I could go and forget about all the worries of school and life and just play my sport. Every time I stepped on the ice, it was like clearing my head, giving myself time to practice, compete and just hang out with my friends.

So tell me why, on a random day in February in the year 2026, I open my phone to see a mass shooting at an ice rink in Rhode Island during a high school hockey team’s senior night. Let that sink in.

A mass shooting at a hockey team’s senior night. I don’t know how much more bizarre it could get and it simply needs to stop.

A night that was supposed to be celebratory, ruined. A place where kids are supposed to have fun and enjoy something most have probably done their whole lives, ruined. What else needs to happen for this violence to stop?

As someone whose brother is currently a senior in high school, who is playing the last game of his high school career tonight, I don’t even have words to express how I’m feeling right now. Fearful? Angry? Upset?

Officials say the altercation is believed to be the result of a family dispute, but why does it even need to get to that point? What solution is a gun supposed to bring to any dispute?

Not to mention, this is Rhode Island’s second mass shooting in the last two months, the other being the shooting at Brown University, which resulted in the death of two students and nine others injured.

Yes, and Rhode Island has extensive gun control laws, including a ban on so-called assault weapons and large capacity magazines, a 7-day waiting period on all gun sales, and a “red flag” law. The hockey rink where the shooting took place, like Brown University, is also a “gun-free zone,” and we once again have seen how worthless that designation is when it comes to someone intent on carrying out their murderous plans.

So what needs to happen for this violence to stop? In this particular case, and in the case of most filicides, I think serious mental illness is a primary factor. I believe there’s also a sickness of the soul in many cases; a toxic narcissism that leads to dehumanizing anyone they see as their enemy, even their own offspring.

I don’t know that we can stop every one of these twisted individuals who are willing to murder their own family members, but I do know that we have the right to protect ourselves (and others) when they carry out their violent attacks, and a “no guns allowed” policy offers no protection at all.

Editor’s Note: The radical left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
