President Donald Trump is renewing his call to send the National Guard into Chicago as a crime-fighting measure, warning in a Truth Social post late Monday night that “murder and crime” is “prevalent throughout the city.”

“CALL IN THE TROOPS, FAST, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!” the president declared in his post.

The federal courts have stymied Trump’s request to mobilized the National Guard in Chicago over crime concerns, and city officials have touted a decline in violent crime compared to 2024. Still, while the city’s homicide rate is notably lower than it was last year, there have still been 386 homicides and almost 1,500 non-fatal shootings since January 1.

As we’ve previously reported, a significant amount of violent crime is taking place on Chicago Transit Authority property, which is off-limits to lawful carry. The latest incident in that “gun-free zone” involves a man who stabbed a passenger at a CTA train station over the weekend.

Police said the stabbing happened around 11:15 p.m. Saturday at the UIC-Halsted CTA Blue Line stop. That station is located at 430 South Halsted Street.

A female of an unknown age was sitting on a bench on the platform when the suspect allegedly approached her, took a knife out of his backpack, and stabbed her in the chest, police said.

CPD said the victim was in good condition on Sunday. The suspect left the scene, walking northbound on South Morgan Street.

A Firearms Policy Coalition-supported lawsuit challenging the carry ban on public transportation in Illinois has reached the Supreme Court, and the state’s reply brief is due in early December. With luck the carry ban will be struck down next year and folks can start to protect themselves against violent predators and deranged individuals before, after, and while they’re on CTA property.

That would be a huge win, but some crooks in the city appear to be targeting victims who are likely to be disarmed by their job: rideshare and delivery drivers. Companies like Uber and Lyft demand that their drivers leave their lawfully-owned guns behind when they’re on the clock, even if they possess a valid carry permit or work in a state where no permit is required for legal gun owners to carry.

Coincidentally or not, the Chicago police are warning drivers working in the city’s North Lawndale neighborhood to be on guard against a robbery crew that’s hit multiple victims in the past few weeks.

According to a community alert from CPD, the same group of robbers is believed responsible for at least five incidents since mid-October, often using rideshare or delivery apps to lure drivers into traps.

In three of the cases, the robbers ordered rides through Uber or Lyft, rode to their destinations, and then produced handguns or threatened violence to take the drivers’ vehicles.

In another incident, police said the robbers ordered food through a delivery app. When the driver arrived with the order, one of the offenders got into the driver’s car and took off.

A fifth robbery involved male offenders who approached a victim on foot, displayed a black handgun, and demanded property before fleeing.

Contractors for Uber and Lyft can choose to violate their policies and carry while they’re working, but if they ever have to use their firearm to defend themselves they’ll quickly be cut loose by the companies.

As unconscionable as these policies are, companies have the right to demand their drivers be defenseless as a condition of their contract. Still, it’s easier to find another job than another life, and frankly, I hope that drivers in Chicago (and elsewhere) are putting their safety first when they get behind the wheel. It’s unlikely that either the police or the National Guard will be around if a robbery crew decides to target a particular driver (or anyone else, for that matter), and our safety is ultimately our responsibility.
