640×480 sensor, 360 pan tilt, and a hardwired 10.1 inch display turn night into data. We ran it in rain, rough trails, and ugly wind to see if it quits.
What You Get In The Box
The Dark 30 Defiance PTZ is a roof mounted thermal camera system built for hunters, ranchers, and night work. With a 640×480 thermal sensor, full 360 pan and tilt, and a 10.1 inch high definition display, it boosts situational awareness for night hunts and late drives home. From multiple color palettes to modular mounts, this package is ready to scan.
Fast Roof Setup That Stays Put
From the factory, the system comes neatly packed in a hard case with foam cutouts, including the base kit, magnetic and bolted mounts, remote, power cords, and tablet mounts. The cutouts are designed for the disassembled system, so once assembled, it doesn’t fit as neatly in the case, but keeping the base outside while storing the rest of the components works well.
Setting up the Dark 30 Defiance PTZ takes about five minutes once you’re familiar with the components. I used the magnetic feet for this review, which held the thermal rock solid on a side by side and pickup roof.
The process is simple: attach the magnetic feet to the base, place the thermal camera, route the cables through a window to the display, mount the display with the included suction cup, plug in the power cords, and you’re ready to hunt.
During testing, I rode over a dozen miles on rough, rocky ATV trails in the rain, and the system didn’t budge. It even held steady in winds exceeding 90 mph, giving confidence that the system won’t come loose during active hunts. One limitation is that the image stability depends on the mounting surface. The side by side overhead bar introduced some bounce, while mounting to a pickup roof resulted in a much steadier image.
Hardwired 10.1 Inch Display Beats Wi Fi Lag
The 10.1 inch LCD is directly wired to the thermal camera, giving a real time, glitch free image. This eliminates the connection issues I’ve encountered with other roof mounted thermal systems that rely on Wi Fi or wireless streaming. The display itself is lightweight at 17 oz and comes in a protective case with rubber corners. It features three buttons on the back, quick disconnect power, and HDMI ports. This tablet also uses a threaded insert for directly screwing in a window mount. I found this more secure than clamps that grab the edges of a tablet.
The 1920×1200 resolution captures critical detail, and the direct camera to screen interface ensures you never miss movement in your field of view. While iPads can be used for similar purposes, the Dark 30 display is more practical for rough outdoor use. Since it is lightweight there is less chance it will get knocked off the window suction mount. Also, a replacement tablet is only $150 if you end up breaking one, which is a lot cheaper than an iPad.
640×480 Imaging, 60 FPS, Real Field Range
The Defiance PTZ offers five thermal palettes: white hot, black hot, rainbow, magenta, and green hot. Switching between them is quick and intuitive. While it is nice to have options, I always end up using white hot.
The 640×480 sensor at 60 fps provides smooth, high resolution imaging. Also, the 32 mm germanium lens with 30 mm focal length delivers a 20° horizontal field of view. Digital zoom is adjustable from 1 to 8x. While magnification isn’t optical, the clarity and sensitivity of the sensor make it easy to identify animals from a distance. In the picture below, the grain bin is at 85 yards, the closest cattle are at roughly 500, and the furthest cattle are at 1,100 yards.
This system makes scanning multiple fields fast and effortless. As a farmer and rancher, I appreciate the no hassle design that lets me simply drive and check the areas I need to. It’s also been useful for locating cattle after dark. Beyond hunting, it doubles as a practical safety tool for spotting deer near roadways. It reveals deer in ditches just beyond the reach of your headlights, giving you extra time to react.
Remote Control That Just Works
The included remote is simple and intuitive. The joystick moves the camera, and the home button returns the thermal to front and center. To the right, the camera button takes pictures or records video, and the top roller adjusts zoom. One drawback is that the zoom is a bit slow, and once the home button is pressed, it can’t be interrupted by moving the joystick. I hope Dark 30 will push an update that allows faster zoom and a way to have the joystick override a return to home press.
App control is also available through the Dark 30 app on Android and iOS. This allows controlling the camera remotely, recording video, or capturing stills while you remain behind your rifle. This can help if you are in front of the thermal trying to get a picture. However, the tablet is so easy to use that there is little need to use your phone.
Onboard Video And Simple Storage
Another feature I appreciate is that the camera records directly to a micro SD card onboard, avoiding the corruption issues I’ve seen with wireless systems.
On one hunt, I recorded a 30 minute hike through tall cotton to get into range of a pig, and the footage was steady. The system automatically divides longer recordings into three minute segments, which is convenient for editing.
Built To Survive Weather And Trails
Constructed from aluminum and rated IP66 for water resistance, the Defiance PTZ is built to withstand the elements. The system performed flawlessly for me, but it can operate in temperatures from -4°F to 122°F. The wired display, robust construction, and modular mounting options all contribute to a reliable, worry free hunting experience. From rough trails to driving in the rain, I haven’t had a single hiccup throughout testing.
