Caldwell Shooting Supplies is one of those companies that shooters have grown to rely on. I use many of their products, from simple paper targets to shooting benches to Lead Sled rifle rests. They produce goods that are well thought out and are affordable. Their stuff tends to last.

It was with great curiosity that I requested three sample AR500 steel target systems from them, knowing that what they build is made to last. Here’s what I asked for, with Caldwell’s pricing:

Before we get into it, here are a few photos…

Plate Rack:

Before legs were added, the plate rack and the gong both required you to supply some 2x4s. The plates are 8 inches in diameter.

The goats are optional, but they add to the fun!

You can shoot it either from the front or the back… just above is the front, with the targets up, and the photo at the top shows them down.

Long Range Gong

Caldwell-AR500-targets-9

We have a ⅜” thick, 18×24 inch plate suspended by two hangers. One nice addition, not shown here, is the included flashbang unit that attaches to the target. This $33 item houses 10 green LED lights, powered by 3 AA batteries.

It attaches via a Velcro strip, included. The lights will strobe-flash when the target is hit, making hits visible from up to a mile away. So, there will be no question if your last shot hit yellow or dirt.

You have two heavy-duty rubber hangers to allow the target to move.

Both targets use some heavy-duty 2×4 mounting hardware. They aren’t going anywhere once you have them set.

Here’s the duelling tree

Caldwell-AR500-targets-5

This is adjustable in terms of angle. You can tilt it forward to soak up heavier-caliber fire. It’s 54 inches tall and has a 24” x 24” base that can be adjusted for uneven ground. It’s rated for handguns at 10 yards, .223 Rem at 100 yards, and .308 Win at 200 yards. It’s got six 6-inch plates that swing when hit. It’s built to last, for sure.

I have about 100 yards that I can shoot in, but one of our sons and his family live next door… well, across the wooded ridge… and they have more room. So, the two long-range targets were placed across the pond on his land. We use them to gear up for deer firearms season, which here in the Hoosier state is typically the last half of November. I kept the Duelling Tree…

If you have the space where you shoot, these targets make for great practice, whether for long-range competition or for hunting preparation. The ⅜” steel they’re made from is tough and will last for hundreds of shots. The Duelling Tree can be used up close, or you can place it way out there for your centerfire rifle sessions.

Another plus is Caldwell’s limited lifetime warranty. You’re covered if something breaks, although it might be kind of hard to break an AR500 steel plate. I’d reckon… Anyway, check out these and other metal targets —they can add a different dimension to your shooting!
