“If we ban assault weapons, mass shootings won’t be nearly the problem they are today.”
How many times have you heard something like that over the years? I’ve personally lost track of how often someone spews such nonsense and I suspect many of you have as well.
The argument that somehow an AR-15 is the root of all of our problems has always been ridiculous, especially since so many high-profile mass killings have involved guns that weren’t so-called assault weapons.
However, since some people seem to have short memories, maybe the recent arrest of a guy outside of the church event attended by conservative Supreme Court justices might wake a couple of people up to reality.
Washington, D.C., police on Sunday arrested a man with hundreds of explosive devices outside a church holding a Mass in honor of the Supreme Court. The man had a manifesto that suggested he was targeting the Supreme Court and Catholics, according to court papers obtained by The Daily Wire.
Louis Geri, a 41-year-old from Arizona and New Jersey, was apprehended outside the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle on October 5, the same day the church held its annual “Red Mass” in which a cardinal prays for the high court as it embarks on a new term, and which is historically attended by justices.
…
After he was arrested, the bomb squad located “a large cache of handmade destructive devices” in the tent, police said. He was charged with: Unlawful Entry, Manufacture, Transfer, Use, Possession or Transportation of Molotov Cocktails, or other Explosives for Unlawful purposes, Threats to Kidnap or Injure a person, Assault on Police Officer x 2, Possession of Destructive Device, Manufacture or Possession of Weapon of Mass Destruction (Hate Crime) and Resisting Arrest.
On Monday, after reviewing the bombs more carefully, police filed an affidavit from a bomb technician saying “there were over 200 devices recovered from D-1’s tent. There was a strong smell of acetone emitting from some of the vials. Some of the liquid was determined to be Nitro Methane. The liquid appeared to be multiple chemicals mixed together, none in original containers … the devices appeared to be fully functional.”
Geri’s manifesto reportedly displayed his animosity toward the Catholic Church, Jews, the Supreme Court, and ICE/ICE facilities, suggesting that he was not exactly someone on the right wing.
But 200 explosive devices that appear to be fully functional is something that should worry literally everyone, regardless of their politics.
For the record, explosives are tightly controlled, but people who know what they are doing or how to use Google can get around that easily enough. It sounds like this guy figured out one way or another.
In the process, he also managed to show that a so-called assault weapon isn’t needed to do horrible things to a lot of people. Even if these devices were relatively low-yield, there were still enough to create untold bloodshed. You cannot stop dangerous people by trying to limit what means might be available to them. There are just too many ways to cause death and destruction, unfortunately.
Luckily, Geri didn’t get to carry out whatever he had intended. He told the cops he had bombs, and they acted accordingly. Now, he’s going to rot in prison, only as a failed domestic terrorist rather than an effective one. I’m so legitimately thrilled to see that be the case, because I stay awake at night worrying about what a nutbar like that might actually do if he weren’t caught first.
