I didn’t always agree with Charlie Kirk, but I always felt he stood for what he believed in. When so many people feel like useless grifters, I never got that impression of Kirk.

I’m very sad that he’s gone, especially in such a senseless act of violence.

We will, of course, be following the story as things continue. I suspect that we’ll have a lot of discussion about what happened to Kirk in the coming days and weeks.

President Trump was fond of Kirk and credited him with rallying the youth vote for him in 2024.

It’s nice to see the other side offer their thoughts at this time, too.

Former President Joe Biden called for an end to political violence after the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at an event in Utah.

Former President Barack Obama also weighed in on social media, saying in part that there is “no place” for this type of violence.

For once, I’m in complete agreement with Obama on something. There’s no place for this type of violence.

We don’t know for sure what the motive was, but we do have every reason to believe it was political. I think Obama recognizes that, too, by invoking the term “democracy” in a situation like this.

Could these just be cynical cases of careful messaging at a time when tensions are going to be worked up? Maybe. Regardless, Obama wasn’t wrong.

Further, Biden–or whoever was running his account, anyway–is right that it must end now.

It’s just too bad that the people at MSNBC didn’t get the memo about careful messaging, as they’ve managed to blame both Charlie Kirk and his supporters for this horrific incident, but at least some on the left recognize this isn’t the best time to celebrate a victory lap.

It seems a number of prominent Democrats did.

  • Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi: A man, who authorities said was a believer in conspiracy theories, struck the Democrat’s husband on the head with a hammer in 2022. Pelosi called Kirk’s shooting “reprehensible” and said, “Political violence has absolutely no place in our nation.”
  • Former US Rep. Gabrielle Giffords: She was shot in 2011 in Arizona and suffered a serious brain injury. Giffords said she was “horrified” to hear of Kirk’s shooting. “Democratic societies will always have political disagreements, but we must never allow America to become a country that confronts those disagreements with violence,” she said.
  • Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro: A fire was set at the Democrat’s house. “We must speak with moral clarity. The attack on Charlie Kirk is horrifying and this growing type of unconscionable violence cannot be allowed in our society,” he said.
  • Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer: She was the subject of a kidnapping plot. “We should all come together to stand up against any and all forms of political violence,” she said.

I just hate it that the one thing we managed to find that so many people on both sides of the aisle agree on is that Charlie Kirk shouldn’t have been murdered.

Obviously, we will continue to monitor this as it develops in the coming days and weeks.

Until then, speaking for myself, I sincerely ask you all to remember Charlie Kirk and his loved ones in your prayers. His wife and two young children will need all of the comfort they can find in God’s loving embrace going forward. I can only imagine the pain and anguish they’re going through right now.

***EDIT***

I should have noted that many of these people engaged in past rhetoric that may have contributed to what happened today. In fact, most of them have to some degree or another. Today, they’re saying the right thing, but years of demonizing people like Charlie Kirk may well have resulted in today’s tragic gunshot.

Editor’s Note: This is far from the first act of political violence directed toward conservatives in recent times, especially as we know many will try to use this to push an anti-gun agenda.
