Demo

Students Demand Action, the youth wing of Everytown for Gun Safety, is organizing a nationwide school walkout on Friday at noon.

The campaign is framed as a call for Congress and state legislatures to ban “assault weapons” and so-called “high-capacity magazines.”

The timing isn’t accidental. The push comes in the wake of the Annunciation Church School tragedy in Minneapolis, where two children were killed and 21 wounded on the first week of school.

Organizers and activists contend the only solution is to outlaw Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs) and magazines that hold more than ten rounds.

The Student Argument

Students and survivors, like Timberlyn Mazeikis of Minnesota, argue that gun violence is a “national crisis.”

Mazeikis said she and her peers will walk out because “until we get these weapons of war off our streets, gun violence will continue to wreak havoc in our schools, homes, and communities.”

The Political Push

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has seized on the tragedy to call a special legislative session. Walz, once praised by Everytown as “Gun Sense Lawmaker of the Year,” now openly says there are “too many of the wrong types of guns in legal possession.”

His allies, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, want bans not only at the state level but also the authority for local governments to write their own restrictions.

What Walz hasn’t addressed? Security for private schools.

As NSSF’s Mark Oliva recently wrote, Walz twice ignored pleas from Catholic bishops for school safety funding.

“The only debate, in Gov. Walz’s estimation, is how much freedom he can take away from those who obey the law in the name of ‘safety,’” Oliva argued.

Oliva points out that the Annunciation murderer used not just an MSR but also a shotgun and a handgun.

He also noted that Minnesota’s new “red flag” law—signed by Walz—failed to stop the killer, raising questions about whether more gun laws do anything to prevent mass violence.

A False Choice

Walz and Everytown are presenting a false binary: surrender constitutional rights or surrender the safety of children.

In reality, there are other options — from school security investments to mental health interventions — that gun control activists downplay.

A Question for Parents

Here’s the challenge for pro-gun families: when these walkouts hit your child’s school, how should your kids respond?

  • Join in to avoid standing out?
  • Stay in class as a quiet act of defiance?
  • Offer a counter-message that defends the Second Amendment while honoring victims?

The gun control lobby understands the optics: classrooms emptied by students chanting for bans make powerful headlines.

For parents who believe in the right to keep and bear arms, the question is urgent: what’s the best way to help your kids navigate this pressure while standing firm in their values?
