Some objectives just get stuck in your mind like a song on repeat. You start thinking about the route and what it will take. You start considering how you’d train and approach it. And you imagine the feeling you’d get when you successfully complete it.
Whether it’s a local hiking trail, a faraway peak, or a 70+ mile loop in Idaho with 18,000 feet of vertical climb, the only way to stop thinking about it is to get out there and take your shot.
That was exactly what happened with Luke Nelson and The Pocatello Round. For 2 decades, the Patagonia trail running ambassador had been obsessed with the idea of running the visual skyline of his hometown in Idaho. The Pocatello Round is 72 miles and covers a third more vertical than climbers on Mount Everest. Over the years, Nelson has tried and failed to complete the route four times.
But in 2024, he changed his approach. Instead of going the distance alone, he asked his community for help. And it made the difference.
Watch Nelson successfully run the loop that dogged him for years, and complete the objective he’d been dreaming of since he was a young man. This Patagonia short film follows his preparation for the day, his execution, and the aftermath.
