What is the LPMR-X?

The Low Profile Mission Recorder (LPMR-X) is a lightweight, compact recording system designed for attachment to night vision devices, such as the PVS-31 and PVS-14. The device records in ultra-high-definition (UHD) 4K at 30fps and utilizes a simple, user-friendly interface. Unlike bulky, cumbersome systems, the LPMR-X offers a low-profile design, ensuring it doesn’t interfere with the operation of your night vision system while providing top-quality video output.

This device operates using an external power source, usually a battery pack, and is compatible with up to 512GB micro SD cards for extended recording time. It also includes features such as seamless 5-minute loop recording, auto-start upon powering up, and an integrated microphone. The LPMR-X can be mounted quickly and securely to various night vision eyepieces, and the updated version includes an optional quick disconnect cable for easier deployment.

Design & Features of the LPMR-X

The LPMR-X features a sleek design that keeps the overall footprint relatively small, making it ideal for users who need a recording device that doesn’t compromise the functionality or comfort of their night vision system. The body material has been improved to reduce weight by 15% bringing the total weight to only 1.1oz. While the device itself is fairly unobtrusive, it provides high-quality video recordings without taking up much space or adding hardly any weight to your setup.

The LPMR-X starts recording automatically when powered on and saves footage in 5-minute loop segments for seamless operation. Its recording indicator light turns off after 5 seconds to minimize visibility. This light is very faint though and is hardly visible to begin with. No problem for hunting, but it could be briefly visible when viewed through NV. While it’s recommended to keep the device powered for 5 minutes after recording critical footage, I experienced no issues unplugging it immediately after use, making it reliable and convenient in the field.

Setup & Use

The LPMR-X is powered via an external battery pack. In my experience, it’s simple enough to integrate into my existing setup. Since I already use an external power bank for my thermal monocular, adding a second cord for the LPMR-X wasn’t an issue. However, one thing to note is that the power cord sticks out about 3 inches, which can be a bit awkward as it dangles around. This is not a problem once plugged into the chord router through my helmet to a power bank. Also, keeping the routed cable plugged in allows me to easily plug in the short cord whenever I want to start recording.

A minor inconvenience I encountered during my testing, which primarily involved hunting pigs and coyotes, was remembering to plug in the power cord to initiate recording. It would be quicker if the device had a power switch or button to start/stop recording instead of dealing with the plug-and-unplug process.

Once the device is installed, it stays securely in place without hardly interfering with my view through my PVS14. The low-profile design ensures that I barely notice the camera. However, I had a slight worry about cracking the housing when installing it. That said, it feels solid once mounted, and the risk is minimal when handled carefully.

LPMR-X Video Quality

The video quality is one of the most important aspects of any recording system, and the LPMR-X does not disappoint. The 4K resolution ensures that you capture every detail of your hunt. Whether it’s a distant coyote in the dark or the subtle movement of pigs, the LPMR will capture them. The clarity is impressive, and the integrated microphone captures environmental sounds reasonably well. I was able to hear myself whispering while hunting. Also, I could hear the distinct “thud” of bullets impacting targets, which adds a nice touch to the footage.

Storage & File Management

The LPMR-X supports micro SD cards up to 512GB, providing ample space for extensive recordings. During my testing, I was concerned that my 16GB card might fill up too quickly, especially while recording in 4K. A 16GB card provides roughly 1 hour of 4K footage (3840 x 2160 at 30fps). For almost all use, I recommend investing in a larger card to avoid worrying about memory capacity.

Managing the footage is also straightforward. I can plug the LPMR-X directly into my iPhone, bypassing the need for WiFi or Bluetooth connections. This seamless connection allows me to download videos directly through the Files app. Doing this saves time and hassle compared to traditional wireless methods.

Summary

The BecauseOperator LPMR-X offers a solid combination of features and performance for those who need a reliable and compact night vision recording solution. While it requires an external power source, it integrates well into an existing gear setup, especially if you’re already using a power bank. The video quality is excellent, and the low-profile design ensures that it doesn’t interfere with your optics. However, the need to plug in the power cord to start recording can be a minor inconvenience during high-stress situations.

At an MSRP of $399 in Canada (approximately $285 US), the LPMR-X is competitively priced for a 4K night vision recorder. It provides solid performance and is ideal for those looking to document their nighttime hunts or tactical operations without the bulk of larger recording systems.
