Another year, another massive showing for 2A supporters across the country. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) just released their final numbers for 2024, and it’s clear—Americans are still exercising their right to bear arms in a big way.
Over 15.2 million NSSF-adjusted background checks were processed for retail firearm sales this year. That’s millions of people taking responsibility for their safety, their families, and their freedom.
December alone clocked in over 1.6 million background checks, marking the 65th consecutive month where NICS checks topped the one-million mark. While these numbers represent a slight dip from 2023—a 7.5% drop for December and a 3.5% decrease overall—the figures remain undeniably strong.
NSSF President and CEO Joe Bartozzi put it simply: “These background check figures show strong sales and that today’s firearm manufacturers are delivering high-quality products.”
It’s worth noting that NICS numbers don’t tell the whole story. In 24 states, certain concealed carry permit holders can skip an additional background check when purchasing a firearm, thanks to pre-verified permits. Those transfers aren’t included in these numbers, meaning the real figures are likely even higher.
What does all this mean?
Despite economic uncertainty, political rhetoric, and constant attacks on the Second Amendment, Americans are voting with their wallets—and their background checks.
Every one of those checks represents someone who decided to take charge of their personal security and constitutional rights.
So here’s to another year of strong numbers, responsible gun ownership, and unwavering commitment to our freedoms. Cheers to the millions of Americans who continue to stand up for the Second Amendment.
