The latest NSSF-adjusted numbers are in, and they’re another clear signal: Americans aren’t backing down when it comes to exercising their Second Amendment rights.

In March 2025, there were 1,386,724 background checks processed through the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), according to NSSF’s adjusted data. That’s a slight 3.8% dip compared to March 2024, but it’s still over 1.3 million Americans walking up to the counter and saying, “I choose freedom.”

Let’s be clear: background checks aren’t a one-to-one with gun sales. Some checks cover multiple firearms, and in 24 states, concealed carry permits allow buyers to skip a new background check altogether. That means the real number of guns sold is likely even higher.

NSSF’s Mark Oliva put it plainly:

“Over 1.3 million times, Americans freely approached the gun counter to lawfully exercise their Second Amendment freedoms… Americans continue to invest in their freedom and safety because it still remains a high priority.”

Despite economic pressures, political games, and nonstop anti-gun rhetoric, the demand is steady. Americans know their safety and their rights are worth protecting. They’re not waiting on politicians to do it for them.

Because when the chips are down, you either have your freedom—or you don’t.
