A Miami homeowner shot an attempted intruder who escaped from a car accident earlier this week.

The homeowner woke up Sunday morning to his dog barking. He went to his second-story balcony and found someone trying to break in.

Hoodline said the intruder climbed over the back fence with a ladder. The homeowner allegedly asked the intruder to show his hands, which he did not do. The homeowner then reportedly told the intruder to get off the property, which the intruder also did not do.

Intruder Shot

He said he “feared for his family’s life” and shot twice at the intruder.

The homeowner then called the police, who arrived and identified the intruder as Whitney Liberal, a 34-year-old man.

According to Local 10 News, Liberal allegedly told police he had escaped from a rollover on the I-75 just before the home intrusion. He sustained the injury to his foot before he and two others left the scene.

On the Record

Liberal claimed that he entered the backyard while calling for his girlfriend to come pick him up.

Police took Liberal to a hospital for his gunshot wound and the injury to his foot in stable condition.

They searched him and found “marijuana and pills that appeared to be ecstasy,” according to Local 10 News.

Since Liberal’s admission to the hospital, he has been charged with “three counts of possession of a controlled substance, and one count each of trespassing on unenclosed curtilage and possession of cannabis.”

Neighbors

Neighbors heard the gunshots and said they could barely believe their ears. “It was shocking because nothing like that ever happens in this community,” Ofelia Martinez said.

“This time of the year again you know, I’m sure that we have to be more vigilant,” Martinez said.

The homeowner is glad that nothing more happened.

“It’s the first time in 30 years, and thankfully it wasn’t robbing, it was him escaping from something he did before,” the homeowner told NBC Miami.
