Choosing the right weapon light can be overwhelming, but the Holosun RAID (Rifle Area Illumination Device) stands out with its impressive performance and user-focused design. Tailored for long-gun applications, the RAID delivers a 1,000-lumen output and includes both M-LOK and Picatinny mounts and a pressure switch. Powered by a rechargeable 18650 battery, it also offers compatibility with two CR123A batteries, ensuring flexibility in power sources.

RAID Out of the Box

The Holosun RAID arrives ready to go, with all the essentials included in the box. Alongside the light itself, you’ll find a single-button Crane port pressure switch, M-LOK and Picatinny mounts, a USB-C rechargeable 18650 battery, an Allen wrench, and a cleaning cloth. This setup ensures you can mount the RAID to most rifles right away, whether your setup uses M-LOK or Picatinny rails.

The inclusion of both mounting systems is particularly convenient. Both mounts are low-profile yet provide enough clearance to avoid interference with suppressors, even on slim handguards. I get a bit of a suppressor shadow due to the light not sticking past the suppressor. However, this is pretty much the standard with factory weapon light mounts.

Initial Impressions

Constructed from 7075 T6 aluminum, the RAID feels robust and durable. The body is IP68-rated, claiming top-tier dust and water resistance. Aiming to see if the RAID lived up to this claim, I tested this by submerging the light and its pressure pad in frozen water for 30 minutes.

Not only did the light remain powered on the entire time, but there was also no water ingress into the battery compartment when I opened it. I also didn’t notice any degraded performance and the light seemed to shine just as bright as it did right before I put it in the water. This durability builds confidence in its ability to handle harsh environments, whether you’re trekking through mud, snow, or rain.

Measuring just 3.20 inches in length, the RAID is relatively compact and lightweight, ensuring it won’t add unnecessary bulk to your rifle. Its 1,000-lumen output is paired with an impressive 80,000 candela, creating a tight beam pattern that excels at illuminating targets out to approximately 200 yards. However, the spill is minimal, meaning objects outside the central beam receive little light compared to similar weapon lights.

While this makes the RAID an excellent option for scoped rifles used at longer distances, it’s less ideal for close-quarters scenarios where wider illumination might be preferred. The picture below compares the RAID to two other popular weapon lights to see how they stack up.

RAID Controls

The RAID offers two control options: an integrated tailcap button and an included remote pressure switch. Both options are intuitive to use, though I noticed a slight delay when releasing the button. Activation is immediate when pressing the button, but the light takes about 1/4 of a second to turn off upon release. While not a dealbreaker, this delay is frustrating compared to other lights with instantaneous response times.

One standout feature is the lockout mode, which prevents accidental activation. Triple-pressing the button disables the light, and repeating the sequence reactivates it. This is especially useful for situations where you want to prevent an accidental light discharge. Additionally, the RAID has both high and low brightness settings, easily toggled with a double button press. The 500-lumen low mode is a great way to extend battery life when full output isn’t necessary. Also, the RAID remembers your last brightness setting and returns to it when turned back on.

RAID Battery

The RAID’s power source is versatile. Capable of using a single 18650 battery—included in the box and rechargeable via a USB-C magnetic charging cable—or two CR123A batteries for added flexibility. The rechargeable 18650 battery offers a modern and convenient approach, eliminating the need for standalone chargers while reducing long-term costs associated with disposable batteries. With multiple power source options, the RAID ensures you’re prepared for extended use in a variety of scenarios.

Brightness and Beam Performance

With 1,000 lumens and 80,000 candela, the RAID delivers a focused beam that excels in mid-range applications. I was able to illuminate targets up to 200 yards away, making it a strong choice for scoped rifle setups. However, the lack of spill limits peripheral visibility, which could be a disadvantage in close-quarters scenarios.

Durability

Holosun’s use of 7075 T6 aluminum ensures the RAID is built to withstand heavy use. It’s rated to endure 1,000g of shock, making it suitable for rifles with notable recoil. The IP68 rating further reinforces its ruggedness, withstanding dust, dirt, and submersion in water. During my testing, the RAID performed flawlessly, even after exposure to extreme conditions.

Holosun RAID Conclusion

The Holosun RAID is a weapon light tailored for long-gun applications. Its tight beam, rugged housing, and included mounting options make it a solid choice for shooters who prioritize mid-range illumination. At an MSRP of $199, the RAID offers a compelling mix of features and performance, especially considering the accessories included. For those seeking a reliable, durable light, the Holosun RAID delivers. It’s a solid investment for anyone looking to enhance their rifle’s capability in low-light environments.
