At SHOT Show 2025, we stopped by Beretta’s range day to get some clarity on the Beretta 1301 Tactical shotgun. With recent changes mandated by the ATF, there’s been a lot of confusion about whether this firearm is still available and what modifications have been made. Let’s break it down.

The 1301 Tactical: What’s the Deal?

The version of the Beretta 1301 Tactical that the ATF has restricted is the 7+1 capacity model, which features a barrel clamp and magazine extension. While this specific configuration is no longer being sold by Beretta, the shotgun is far from discontinued.

Beretta has released a compliant version, known as the 1301 Tactical C, which ships with a 5+1 capacity and no magazine extension. Aside from these changes, the shotgun remains identical in design and functionality. It’s the same reliable, hard-hitting shotgun many know and love.

Can You Still Add an Extension?

Yes! While the 1301 Tactical C comes without a magazine extension, extensions themselves are not illegal.

Once you purchase the shotgun, you’re free to modify it as you see fit, including adding an extension from a third-party manufacturer. Companies already offer a variety of aftermarket options for customizing the 1301 Tactical to meet your specific needs.

Why the 1301 Tactical Is Still a Workhorse

The Beretta 1301 Tactical has built a reputation as one of the most reliable and versatile shotguns on the market. It’s a favorite among law enforcement and home defenders for its:

  • Fast cycling: The shotgun’s gas system ensures quick follow-up shots.
  • Durability: It’s designed to perform under tough conditions.
  • Adaptability: With plenty of aftermarket support, it’s easy to customize for different applications.

We loaded up five rounds at the range to put the updated version to the test. As expected, the 1301 Tactical performed flawlessly, delivering smooth and consistent performance.

What to Look for at Your Dealer

If you’re shopping for the 1301 Tactical, the key difference to note is the model marking. The new version is labeled 1301 Tactical C, while the discontinued 7+1 version simply says 1301 Tactical. Be sure to double-check before purchasing, especially if you’re looking for the original.

Final Thoughts

The Beretta 1301 Tactical remains a top-tier choice for home defense, law enforcement, and beyond. While the recent changes may require a bit of extra effort for those wanting the extended capacity, the shotgun’s core reliability and performance are unchanged.

Keep an eye out for the 1301 Tactical C on dealer shelves, and let us know what you think about the changes. Are these ATF-mandated modifications a deal-breaker, or is the 1301 Tactical still the king of tactical shotguns?
