The Colorado General Assembly concluded its 2024 session on May 8th, ending a term marked by significant debate over gun control laws.

Despite attempts by some legislators to pass stricter regulations, several major anti-gun bills were defeated, thanks to active opposition from local 2A supporters, NRA and RMGO members.

Key victories for 2A advocates included the rejection of HB24-1270, which would have required gun owners to carry liability insurance, and HB24-1292, which aimed to ban a wide range of semi-automatic firearms, including the popular AR-15.

Another defeated proposal, HB24-1310, would have prohibited school employees from carrying firearms on school grounds, potentially impacting the FASTER Colorado program and carry permissions on college campuses.

However, the session wasn’t without setbacks for gun rights supporters. Among the bills that passed and are awaiting Gov. Polis’s decision are HB24-1174, which raises training requirements for concealed carry permits, and HB24-1348, mandating secure storage of firearms in unattended vehicles.

Additionally, HB24-1349 proposes a 6.5% excise tax on firearms and ammunition sales, a measure that if signed, will be presented to voters this fall.

The contentious session also saw the introduction of SB24-131, which extends gun-free zones to more locations, including polling places and churches. This bill, despite amendments, remains a concern for Second Amendment advocates.

Gov. Polis has already signed SB24-066 into law, requiring payment processors to use merchant category codes for tracking firearm-related purchases.

The NRA-ILA encourages its members and Second Amendment advocates to contact Gov. Polis and urge him to veto the pending bills. The organization thanks its members for their active involvement in legislative matters, emphasizing the impact of their advocacy.
