A St. Pete homeowner defended himself during a violent home invasion around 2 a.m. Monday, April 14th. Two armed intruders broke into a home on 40th Street North. The homeowner, armed with a firearm, opened fire.

One suspect, identified as 20-year-old Marcel Williams, was shot and later died at the hospital. The second suspect fled and remains at large.

Police say the break-in was targeted. They’re still investigating the motive.

Neighbor Rick Richardson, who lives on the block, described the tense aftermath as police flooded the street. He said the shooting clearly shook the neighborhood. “Sad to see this because I can tell that affects a lot of the neighbors around here,” he said.

“Two guys walked up there with guns, shirts pulled up as masks.” He added, “Sad that someone died, but better than innocent people getting killed.”

A police official told WFLA, “Kind of everyone’s nightmare—to wake up at 2 in the morning and have someone in their home that doesn’t belong there.”

Officers emphasized the importance of being prepared. “In this case, the homeowner did have a firearm. And I think that’s something to consider,” she added.

Investigators are going door to door and asking residents to check their surveillance cameras for any footage from around 2 a.m.

Police say this case highlights the value of self-defense and the right to protect your home.

When criminals force their way in, the ability to fight back can be the difference between life and death.
