We’re now in the second day of the year, and as things go, it’s been an eventful one. I mean, we’ve had at least one terrorist attack, possibly two, on just the first day. One would be hard-pressed not to picture things slowing down from there, right?
Well, that’s certainly what I’d picture, at least.
Unfortunately, it seems the first day wasn’t even finished with its shenanigans.
You see, there were 10 people shot outside of a nightclub in New York City just before midnight Wednesday night.
At least 10 people, mainly teenagers, were injured in a mass shooting outside a nightclub in Queens on Wednesday night, according to sources and the NYPD.
A group of four men fired at least 30 gunshots into a crowd that gathered near the Amazura nightclub in Jamaica just before 11:20 p.m. after a private event at the location, according to cops and the sources.
Six females and four males, ranging in age from 16 to 20, were struck by bullets, NYPD officials said at a Thursday morning press conference.
Police are searching for a light-colored sedan in connection with the shooting.
Well, at least the NYPD gave people a very detailed description of what they should be on the lookout for.
It seems the club in question was closed for a private event reportedly being held in memory of a known gang member.
Sources familiar with the investigation reported that the hall was hosting a private party at the time of the shooting. The event apparently was in honor of a known gang member in the community slain last October whose birthday coincided with New Year’s Day.
As around 90 people partied inside the Amazura, another 15 people lined up outside waiting to get into the Wednesday night event that was at capacity, authorities said.
Law enforcement sources said four suspects walked eastbound along 144th Place approached and began firing indiscriminately at the crowd.
“Four males opened fire over 30 times in the direction of the group standing outside the event space, striking multiple victims. The males fled on foot westbound on 91st Street towards 143rd Place, where they entered a light-colored sedan with out-of-state plates,” NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said during an early morning press conference. “Police officers responding to the multiple 911 calls found a total of 10 victims — six females, four males — which were taken to area hospitals. All of the victims are expected to recover.”
So a party for a known gang member? Sounds like a good place to look for someone if you’ve got a score to settle.
As noted, this was also on January 1st, the same day as the attack on Bourbon Street and the explosion in Las Vegas that is being investigated as terrorism. This isn’t terrorism, just street punks being street punks and a lot of people being hurt because of it.
However, with gun laws in the state and the repeated claims that gun laws work, I find it difficult to see how any can actually figure that considering something like this still happens. While there were no fatalities, that’s a matter of either luck, poor marksmanship, or a combination of the two. It damn sure wasn’t any gun control laws that somehow kept bad people from getting guns.
Clearly.
