GunBroker.com’s Top Selling Report, presented by GunGenius.com, is available for April, and CZ-USA shotguns occupied three of the top five positions in the new side-by-side market. The company’s Hammer Classic took top honors in the new side-by-side shotgun sales while the company’s Bobwhite G2 and Sharp-Tail models occupied the fourth and fifth positions (respectively).

It’s interesting that an external hammer-fired double gun takes the top spot this month, but its not surprising considering the Hammer Classic’s build quality and styling. With their Turkish walnut stocks, splinter forearms, and stylish color case hardened receivers Hammer Classics are striking firearms and accurate representations of Victorian-era shotguns. The CZ, however, offers considerable advantages over vintage shotguns from the late nineteenth century. There are no concerns about load selection due to the questionable quality of the metal, and with five flush-fit screw-in choke tubes you can adjust constriction as desired. CZ-USA also employs gunsmiths capable of working on the Hammer Classic should the need arise. Finding a gunsmith that works on vintage-era hammer guns is difficult at best and perhaps impossible. The same is true for finding spare parts for your original hammer gun.

The CZ offers all the benefits of a double without all the hassle. It’s a beautiful shotgun with modern machining and materials that is suitable for a variety of hunting and shooting situations. You can’t shoot it quite as quickly as a more modern double gun with internal hammers, but in many circumstances, such as walking up a pheasant that is sitting tight in cover or calling for a target at the trap range an external hammer shotgun functions just as effectively as an internal hammer gun.

CZ Hammer Classic Side-by-Side Shotgun

The Hammer Classic is available in 12-gauge with 30-inch gloss black chrome barrels, giving it an overall length of 47.38 inches. Weight is around 7.5 pounds but can vary depending on the density of the wood. A manual tang safety is included, a feature not found on most vintage guns. The CZ also offers another feature not found on vintage hammer guns—a 3-inch chamber. There’s also a Coach version of the CZ-USA Hammer with shortened barrels that’s reminiscent of the defensive shotguns of the late nineteenth century and is a favorite of SASS shooters.

If you’re searching for a side-by-side with internal hammers the Bobwhite G2 and Sharp-Tail are excellent options. I owned a Bobwhite 20-gauge side-by-side for several years and regret ever selling that gun because it was beautifully balanced and with its dual triggers and straight stock it offered the look and feel of a classic double gun at a very affordable price point. The 28-gauge model with 3-inch chambers weighs in at about 5.5 pounds and will likely be one of the next shotguns I add to my collection, a perfect upland field gun that’s suitable for doves, quail, and preserve pheasants. The Sharp-Tail is another classic double but offers false sideplates, color case finish, a beavertail forearm, and single trigger. Unlike the Bobwhite, the Sharp-Tail comes with a more familiar (to American shooters) pistol grip stock. All CZ-USA side-by-sides come with modern CNC machined receivers and extractors. The Bobwhite G2 is available both in a Southpaw (left-handed) configuration and an “Intermediate” version with shortened barrels and a shortened length of pull. There’s also a Coach version of the Sharp-Tail with shortened barrels as well.

CZ-USA’s shotguns are popular among hunters and shooters, but the Hammer Classic, Bobwhite G2, and Sharp-Tail aren’t the only CZ guns to make the list this month. CZ-USA’s 75 pistol climbed to the number five position among best-selling new handguns this month, which isn’t surprising considering that gun is a durable, reliable autoloader that’s available in a variety of configurations. The CZ 75 was introduced in 1975 and utilizes a short-recoil operating system. It has been offered in both compact and full-sized configurations over the years, generally as a DA/SA pistol. The CZ 75 is well-balanced and offers double-stack magazines, and its accuracy and reliability have made it a favorite of military and law enforcement agencies around the world as well as recreational and competitive shooters. Also making Gunbroker’s list of best-selling guns this month is the CZ 457 rimfire rifle, which ranks number five among the top-selling new bolt-action rifles. The 457 is an evolution of the 452 and 455 rifles, and like the 75 pistol it is available in a variety of configurations including left-handed models and suppressor-ready versions with threaded muzzles. There are also versions with heavy barrels and adjustable stocks that are designed to compete in precision rimfire events.

CZ-USA offers a wide variety of firearms, many of which appear on Gunbroker’s best-seller lists throughout the year. The company’s over/under shotguns are popular among hunters and competitive shooters, and the 600 family of centerfire rifles has added a new American version with a classic walnut stock that’s suitable for big-game and varmint hunting. The company, which was founded in 1936 in the Czech Republic, also owns Dan Wesson and Colt. With their modern machining capabilities and long history of manufacturing high-quality firearms it’s no surprise to see that CZ-USA guns rank among the best-selling firearms this month, a trend that is likely to continue into the future.
