Smith & Wesson have announced their foray into the lever-action market with the Model 1854. The rifle’s name was inspired by the Volcanic lever-action, patented by Smith & Wesson in 1854, and aims to incorporate the feel of their large-frame revolvers. A stainless-steel model with polymer grips will be the mainline offering, as well as a limited-edition model that sports a high-grade walnut stock and polished black PVD finish over its metal parts.

At release, the rifle will be chambered in .44 Rem Mag, and have a 9+1 capacity. The magazine tube is removeable to allow for safe unloading. Included on the rifle is a length of Picatinny rail that is compatible with mounts that share the Marlin 1894 hole pattern. All models will ship with a gold bead front sight and XS Sights adjustable ghost right sight.

To further the accessory compatibility for the 1854, the stainless-steel version has an M-LOK forend with textured grip panels. Additionally, the all versions will feature a 11/16-24 threaded barrel with thread protector. A flat trigger was chosen for consistent finger placement to aid in accuracy when operating the rifle. The action uses a large loop lever to provide increased area for cycling the action with or without gloves.

The new Smith & Wesson Model 1854 is an exciting new option for both lever-action enthusiasts, and new shooters looking for a classic design.
