Gemtech Neutron 7.62mm Suppressor: Full Review

Gemtech has manufactured suppressors for nearly 50 years, and it has always been on the leading edge of suppressor design. Gemtech offers an extensive selection, ranging from integrally suppressed rimfires to robust 7.62 NATO-caliber rifle cans. On October 3, 2024, Gemtech announced direct-thread versions of a few popular models, including the Neutron 7.62.

Gemtech Neutrons are available in two versions, one with a factory-installed Elite Taper Mount (ETM) and another direct-thread model. Users can also install any HUB-pattern alternative shorter than 2 inches, but the ETM model offers a handy rapid-mounting feature that many will feel is worth the $100 upgrade. Gemtech direct-thread HUB mounts are offered separately, so the best of both worlds are available. Neutron suppressors ships with spanner wrenches to make servicing easy. Options are always great.

All Neutrons are manufactured from 17-4 PH stainless steel and Ti-6Al-4V titanium materials. The Neutron features a so-called “tubeless” design with the main body comprised of a blast chamber, blast baffle and baffle stack, all welded into a solid unit. Each baffle features what Gemtech calls a stepped-baffle design, or what appears to be concentric steps along the face of each baffle. This design element was engineered to slow-down expanding gasses and reduce pressure, which are important fundamentals for sound suppression.

With the ETM mount installed, the Neutron 7.62 weighed 18.2-ounces with a length of 7.4 inches. When mounted on an AR-10, the Neutron 7.62 displayed a nice balance. It is relatively compact for a full-auto-rated 7.62mm suppressor. The most unique feature is hidden within. After being assembled and welded, interlocking geometry creates intentional channels that surround each baffle, described as “proprietary evacuating blast chambers.” The chambers direct lingering pressures towards the muzzle and away from the shooter’s face with a series of ports that redirect the gasses. The removable GM-S1 endcap is designed to act as a flash hider and help redirect muzzle blast, too. The GM-S1 also aids in slowing and redirecting internal gasses with its beveled backplate that faces a series of ports underneath. The design eases pressures and gasses out slowly around the endcap.

The ETM model ships with a three-port RTM muzzlebrake and shim kit, both of which are treated with Armornite for corrosion and wear resistance. When properly installed and aligned, there is a witness-mark at the 12 o’clock position. Attaching the suppressor to the brake is simple. First, slide the suppressor onto the brake. Then, line up the witness mark on the suppressor and locking ring with the mark on the brake. Finally, joggle it to fully seat and twist the suppressor body until it ratchets to a stop with the witness mark lining up with an offset “lock” mark on the muzzle device. It’s a smart way to ensure your suppressor won’t launch downrange.

To remove the Neutron, twist the suppressor to the left until the top witness marks line-up and the suppressor breaks loose. Then, slide the suppressor off the brake. With practice, it takes seconds. No buttons are required, and there are no cams or sliders to jam. Other than the mount and the endcap, the Neutron is not user-serviceable, but tools are included for both the endcap and the ETM mount.

At the Range

I mounted the suppressor on a LaRue Tactical PredatOBR 7.62 and fired Federal Premium’s 175-grain Gold Medal Sierra MatchKing at 100 yards. The Neutron 7.62 performed beautifully on the “tOBR,” resulting in excellent sound reduction and decent felt-recoil reduction. The tone of the sound was pleasing when compared to other .30-caliber suppressors. It seemed “deeper” and, thus, it was perceived as quieter. There was also a noticeable lack of gas blowback. After 20 rounds of rapid-fire, there was almost no perceptible gas in my face. The design features came together, making the Neutron 7.62 suppressor a true joy to use. Gemtech has raised the bar once again.
