Springfield Armory have announced the launch of the new 1911 DS Prodigy Compact 9mm. Offered in 3.5” and 4.25” variants, the new 15-round Prodigy Compact takes the proven 1911 platform and enhances it with double-stack capacity as well as a carry-driven feature set.

Configured around a flush-fitting, double-stack magazine, these new pistols are slim enough for a comfortable grip while still packing in 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition. Both variants come standard with two magazines.

Due to it being designed for concealed carry and self-defense, the pistols feature a tritium front sight post for visibility in low-light conditions. This mates up with a serrated black U-notch rear sight unit. In addition, the pistols employ AOS (Agency Optic System) plates designed exclusively for the 1911 DS.

Machined from billet steel, each AOS plate is designed to achieve optimized height and features an integral rear sight. The Prodigy ships with a HEX Dragonfly compatible plate as well as a standard cover plate, while additional optic-specific plates are available for purchase on the Springfield Armory Store.

To ensure the Prodigy Compacts are as light as possible — with the 3.5” model weighing 25.5 oz. and the 4.25” weighing 29 oz. — their polymer grip modules are mounted to a billet machined 7075-T6 aluminum frame. The result is a compact and lightweight CCW. The pistols’ slides are made of forged carbon steel, and the match-grade bull barrels are crafted from forged stainless steel.

In addition to an ambidextrous safety, the Prodigy Compacts feature recontoured hammers and beavertail grips safeties that minimize bulk while retaining full functionality. For corrosion-resistance, the pistols feature a black Cerakote finish on their metal parts that complements the black polymer grip module. The barrels feature a black DLC finish.

“The release of these compact variants of the popular 1911 DS Prodigy offers EDC enthusiasts an exciting new option,” says Steve Kramer, Vice President of Marketing for Springfield Armory. “Combining double-stack capacity with ease of carry and the excellent shooting characteristics of the proven 1911 pistol, the new Prodigy Compact warrants serious consideration for your self-defense needs.”

With an MSRP of $1,549 for either variant, the 1911 DS Prodigy Compacts can now be found on Springfield Armory’s website.
