We’re live at NRAAM 2025, and one of the coolest guns we’ve handled so far is straight from Mossberg. Meet the brand-new Mossberg 990 Aftershock—a compact, hard-hitting 12-gauge semi-auto that’s ready for anything.
The Aftershock builds off the legendary success of the 590 Shockwave but adds a major twist: it’s gas-operated and semi-automatic, not a pump. No tax stamp required—this “other firearm” is good to go straight from the factory in its compact configuration.
The model we handled sports a 14.75-inch cylinder bore barrel and a 5+1 capacity with 2.75″ shells. The operating system, derived from the proven 940 series, is fully contained within the forend and upgraded for better reliability without needing the gun braced against your shoulder.
Oversized controls are everywhere: a big bolt release, knurled charging handle, enlarged beveled loading port, and a super smooth lifter for quick, pinch-free loading. Mossberg also designed a new rubber-overmolded grip with an integrated QD sling point and a thumb safety positioned for fast, instinctive access.
The forend strap keeps your hand safe from the muzzle and gives you better control, and M-LOK slots on both sides and the bottom let you add lights, lasers, or whatever else you need.
Speaking of lasers, Mossberg even offers a version of the Aftershock equipped with a factory-mounted Crimson Trace Lasersaddle—perfect for aiming from awkward positions.
Despite its size, the Aftershock handles like a dream. The gas system makes recoil manageable, and with its semi-auto cycling, it’s faster and smoother than a pump.
Priced right ($1,200) and built for serious real-world use, the 990 Aftershock is a solid pick for defense, camping, hiking, or just plain fun. Mossberg continues to prove that tactical innovation is alive and well.
