Louisville, KY – On August 28, 2024, what started as a routine traffic call turned into a tense chase involving an armed suspect at a busy Walmart.

Around 12:15 p.m., LMPD Officer Brandon Brinkley was working a non-injury collision when he got a call for backup from an off-duty officer at the intersection of New Cut Road and Outer Loop.

The off-duty officer and a Kentucky State Police trooper were dealing with a crash after a pursuit, and the situation escalated when a passenger, armed and wearing an orange shirt, bolted from the scene.

Officer Brinkley responded quickly, heading to the last known location of the fleeing suspect, who had run toward the nearby Walmart.

Upon arriving at the tire center, Officer Brinkley began asking customers if they had seen anyone matching the description. Two customers pointed him in the right direction, but by then, the suspect had already ditched his orange shirt in one of the aisles, hoping to blend into the crowded store.

Spotting the suspect running toward the front of the store, Officer Brinkley gave chase. Despite multiple commands to stop, the suspect kept running.

Things escalated further when the suspect, now outside, reached into his waistband and turned the corner of the store. He forced his way into a minivan in the pharmacy drive-thru, trying to carjack an innocent woman at gunpoint.

Bodycam footage shows the suspect struggling to get the minivan moving, using one hand to press the gas pedal and the other to fumble with the gear shifter. Officer Brinkley quickly moved in and, seeing the danger to the woman, discharged his firearm through the windshield of the van, hitting the suspect.

The woman was able to escape unharmed, and Officer Brinkley held the suspect at gunpoint until backup arrived. Officers removed the suspect from the vehicle, arrested him, and provided medical attention for his non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Two weapons were recovered: one was a realistic-looking replica in the suspect’s pocket, and the other, a real handgun, was found on the floorboard of the van.

The suspect was identified as 37-year-old Randall Allen. He was transported to the University of Louisville Hospital and now faces a long list of charges, including first-degree robbery, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, wanton endangerment, unlawful imprisonment, and drug-related offenses.

Thanks to Officer Brinkley’s swift action, the situation was brought under control without any injuries to the public.
