Vortex just gave fans of the Defender series a little more to choose from. The Defender-CCW, Defender-ST, and Defender-XL already made their rounds on pistols, carbines, and competition guns across the country over the past year. But now, all three optics are available in a green 3 MOA dot. This gives shooters another way to fine-tune their sight picture to their environment, or just to their eyes.
Green vs. Red: What’s the Difference?
If you’ve ever had trouble picking up a red dot quickly on a bright sunny day, it might be worth trying green. Green light is supposedly more visible to the human eye in daylight, potentially making the dot easier to spot. It also tends to stand out better against red clay, sand, and other arid environments. For shooters with astigmatism, green can also offer a cleaner, more defined aiming point where red might look blurry or starburst-like. However, for my eyes, green and red look the same. I think it makes the most sense for people in desert environments with a lot of red rock. Red may be better for greener climates.
There’s no right answer, just what works best for your eyes and your environment. Like most things in shooting, it comes down to personal preference, and now Vortex gives you that choice across their Defender line.
Defender-XL: Bigger Window, Faster Transitions
The Defender-XL was made for competition. Its oversized window gives you a massive field of view for tracking targets across a stage and speeding up those follow-up shots. The optic uses the DeltaPoint Pro footprint and includes features like motion activation, a 10-minute auto-shutoff, and Vortex’s Fast-Rack texturing up front for one-handed slide racking.
The battery life is a solid 25,000 hours at setting 6. A ShockShield polymer insert helps absorb everyday abuse from slide impacts or barricade bumps.
This green version comes in 3 MOA only, adding to the already existing red options with multiple dot sizes. For those who want all the details, check out the full Defender-XL review here: Is Bigger Always Better?! Meet the New Vortex Defender-XL!
Defender-ST: The Utility Player
The Defender-ST is your general-purpose workhorse. It’s been riding shotguns, handguns, and offset carbine mounts since it launched. With the same core features as the XL; ShockShield insert, DeltaPoint Pro footprint, 25,000-hour runtime, and motion activation, the ST just comes with a smaller footprint and slightly more compact build.
It’s ideal for folks who want one optic they can bounce between platforms, especially in more tactical or defensive setups. The new green 3 MOA version joins the existing red offerings. Giving y’all more flexibility in how you run your gear. For those who want all the details, check out the full review here: Vortex Defender-ST™: New Red Dot Review!
Defender-CCW: Better Optics, Smaller Package
For everyday carry, the Defender-CCW delivers a tight footprint with a relatively large viewing window. One of the most noticeable upgrades in the green version is that Vortex has improved the refresh rate, completely eliminating the pulsing effect that some users noticed in earlier batches. Now, the dot stays stable and clean even during fast movement or recoil.
Battery life drops to around 9,500 hours, which is understandable given the more compact form factor and smaller battery. It still includes motion activation, a 10-minute auto shutoff, and button lockout for carry use. Built on the Shield RMS footprint, it’s compatible with a wide range of slim carry pistols.
The new green 3 MOA version adds to the red-dot variants already on shelves. This rounds out the lineup with something for folks who want to mix things up. For those who want all the details, check out the full review here: New: Vortex Defender – CCW™ Red Dot Review
Final Thoughts: More Choices, Same Solid Foundation
Vortex isn’t reinventing the Defender line here, they’re expanding it. The green 3 MOA options for the XL, ST, and CCW simply give shooters more ways to match their optics to their eyes, gear, and surroundings. Whether you’re running a race gun or a daily carry, it’s nice to see Vortex filling in the gaps. More options, same reliability. That’s the kind of update I can get behind.
