A Florida homeowner’s son fatally shot an armed intruder earlier this week.

Tampa Bay Times identified the intruder as 46-year-old Tony Sei. Sei entered the Hillsborough County home around midnight in an armed intrusion.

The son woke up in the middle of the invasion and fired at the intruder.

Police received a 911 call of a home invasion around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.

They found Sei dead from multiple gunshot wounds, according to a press release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigation

Police found Sei with a handgun.

The homeowner’s son has not been identified other than as an “adult.”

The HCSO is currently investigating the shooting. They have not stated whether or not the residents knew Sei.

Supportive Sheriff

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister supports the son’s actions.

“Imagine the fear of being awoken in the middle of the night to a stranger invading your home,” Chronister said.

“This is every homeowner’s greatest fear, a dangerous and brazen individual breaking in,” Chronister said, “showing a complete disregard for the safety and security of others. Our thoughts are with this family as they recover from the trauma of this event.”

Sheriff Chronister is considering this a case of self-defense. Other sheriffs in similar cases have not been so generous. Each county has a different sheriff and a different prosecutor.

Some prosecutors choose to focus on certain crimes over others. A study from the University of Illinois dove into how crime and punishment change by location.

The researchers in the study “found dramatic variation in how different counties punish the same crime” according to Berkeley Haas Newsroom.

The homeowner’s son was congratulated for his act of self-defense. In other places, exercising those 2nd Amendment rights can land you in serious trouble.

It is important to prepare yourself by owning a firearm. It is not any less important to prepare yourself by knowing your local gun laws.
