Canadian Government Bans Hundreds of Gun Models With Stroke of a Pen

I don’t spend a lot of time studying other countries and their system of government. Most of what I understand about parliamentary governments like Canada’s was learned from David Weber’s Honor Harrington books.

One thing I knew beyond that was how little they value people’s right to keep and bear arms. In fact, they don’t think there’s any such right. Because of that, and despite the fact that Canadian law enforcement has made it clear that past gun control efforts were a complete trainwreck, it seems that they’re still looking for more to do.

However, for whatever reason, they don’t have to have gun bans passed by parliament. They can just up and decide all these guns are now banned, which is just what they did.

The federal government announced new gun control measures Thursday, adding several hundred models and variants to its list of banned weapons.

“These firearms can no longer be legally used, sold or imported in Canada,” Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc told reporters.

The announcement comes one day before the 35th anniversary of the massacre at École Polytechnique de Montréal. Radio-Canada first reported the news earlier Thursday.

The new measures, which are effective immediately, list more than 300 makes and models of what the government calls “assault-style” firearms as prohibited weapons.

RCMP Deputy Commissioner Bryan Larkin told reporters that the models that were assessed and added to the list fall under the government’s 2020 definition of assault-style weapons. The Liberals previously banned 1,500 models under that definition.

There will be an amnesty period until Oct. 30 of next year for current owners to comply with the ban. The new models will be part of the government’s planned buy-back program.

The buy-back program still hasn’t been fully launched but Minister of Public Services Jean-Yves Duclos said Thursday that a pilot program that has been running for the past month has collected and destroyed a “couple dozen” guns.

Defence Minister Bill Blair said some of the guns the government plans to collect will be sent to Ukraine as part of Canada’s ongoing donations of military aid to that country.

“The Department of National Defence will begin working with the Canadian companies that have weapons that Ukraine needs … in order to get these weapons out of Canada and into the hands of the Ukrainians,” he said.

This is absolutely vile.

“Oh, it’s OK. We’re going to send all of these guns to Ukraine so they can fight the Russians.”

No, it’s not. It’s not OK at all.

First, the last time I checked, what the Ukrainians needed was ammo and munitions like missiles, not some Canadian Gomer’s stock AR-15. Sending them second-hand small arms is nothing more than an attempt to pretend these guns are being used for some higher purpose rather than just being destroyed.

That doesn’t make anyone feel better about their lawfully purchased firearms essentially being stolen via government mandate.

Second, the fact that the Trudeau administration could just up and decide these other guns are now prohibited completely is insane.

Never let anyone tell you Canada is a free country. It’s not. This stuff doesn’t happen in a free country. We were up in arms because the ATF up and banned an accessory, for crying out loud, then we fought and got that ban overturned entirely and are working on another accessory ban being overturned.

That’s what happens in a free nation.

But only if we maintain our vigilance, because out there right now are a bunch of gun control activists who are looking at what Canada just did and calling it a good start.
